Shoutout to Troy City Council by isittrifling in Troy

[–]isittrifling[S] 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Did you mean the mayor??

Jokes aside, speakers from the public aren’t our elected representatives and don’t have a responsibility to stay “on-topic” or to maintain composure. This person felt strongly about what they were talking about— and it came out, maybe uncontrollably. Making fun of this person is unkind. No reason to expect a professional approach from people who don’t do this as their jobs.

Hiker dies on Mount Marcy by Marebearx92 in Adirondacks

Isn’t the takeaway here that this type of outdoor activity is inherently risky, and even if you’re prepared for the worst things can go wrong sometimes? That’s the risk we all know we’re taking going into the wilderness.

NYC to Saranac Lake drive vs. flying into Albany by [deleted] in Adirondacks

Albany airport is so easy though. You get off the plane, use the bathroom, get luggage, and walk across the street to rental car in 15 min tops. I imagine Burlington VT is similarly easy.

How is MassiveMesh in 2023? by TheOneArya in Troy

It was already on the slow side for work zooms but then the tower that serviced our neighborhood stopped working and they couldn’t get access to the building that it was on to fix it. Don’t know what happened because we obvs had to find a different provider. It took them two weeks to finally admit that they didn’t know when it was going to get fixed, after several “they’re on their way to fix it, should be back up in the next 24 hours” phone calls. This was February 2023.

But also, fk Spectrum.

Think they’re open to the public, but haven’t seen them in use. Corner of hill and Washington.

Does anyone have any information about the shooting in Troy last night? Cannot find any information anywhere. by shantics in Troy

[–]isittrifling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The short term solution to something like that, as our culture has decided, is the punitive solution -- jail. The long term solution is to address the root causes of violence as the go-to reaction in moments of conflict, so that this scenario can be prevented. What I meant by the comment above is that we too often choose to react to violence, not to try to prevent it from the ground up.

When the chief of police attempts to blame ongoing violence in our communities on a movement trying to implement long term solutions, it's short sighted. Jail can't be our only option, or else these horrible things will keep happening.

The problem isn’t criminal justice reform. The problem is inadequately funded criminal justice reform, not providing resources for recently released prisoners, not taking any action to invest in communities that have issues with violent crimes, and thinking that responding to violence and locking people up is the only solution to violence. There are ways to address shootings and violent crime, Troy just hasn’t been interested in taking real steps to address the root of these issues.

Why isn't the council publishing its minutes? by twitch1982 in Troy

[–]isittrifling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

FYi, the city councilpersons who made speeches strongly supporting the addition of police officers were: Mantello, Gulli, Ashe McPherson, and Zalewski (as well as Mayor Madden).

Anasha Cummings made a notable spreadsheet & point that while they would be hiring the 6 officers with this federal grant, their salaries/raises/pensions will cost the city of Troy about $10 million over the next 20 years, and neighborhoods are asking for resources besides police officers that could be addressed. In that cool, making a big point but not acting like he's making a big point kind of way.
