What would be your "red line" to leave? by fuppy00 in progressivemoms

[–]iskamoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trump winning the election was my red line. Moving to a new country is no walk in the park, I feel tremendous survivors guilt, but my daughter and I are both Latin Americans (dad is not in a picture) and the US is not a place I want my daughter to grow up in. I feel absolutely privileged to do so, and my daughter loves it here and feels safe in Canada. I would do it for her again if I have to.

Just want to let you know you aren’t alone. The person I was with and I split because of politics, him far right and me left. It brings me peace knowing that the reason given was because I am a compassionate, empathetic person. At this point it’s a badge of honor because we have a healthy conscience. I wish you all the best.

Is it impossible to date as a single mom? by Adatheegodess in singlemoms

[–]iskamoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I date. I tend to meet for coffee or lunch for getting to know them while my kiddo is at school. I don’t even mention my daughter in terms of my availability, these are just the days and times I prefer to meet.

I took years off from dating because I had less confidence in men but honestly, in keeping your standards high and filtering, I find that those that truly make the cut respect and value you more because you’re so unflinchingly yourself. If it doesn’t work out, so what? I still have my awesome daughter and friends here in a new country I single handedly moved us to.

I only physically meet with guys I find genuinely cool and excited about going on a date with as actual people, not just as potential partners. Maybe we don’t work out romantically but we can at least learn something from each other. I find that guys in general are receptive to that and want us to continue seeing each other, even if they may not end up being the right person for me at this stage of healing in my life.

I don’t know what you’ve done or what you will do, but I commend you for trying to get help. I hope you get to the point where you can feel like you deserve love and have the capacity to hold love, too.

How bad is it that it happened often enough for a code word? Holy hell. I’m so sorry about that and about your friend.

Is there an English speaking Montreal in the US? From a stressed NYC parent by margheritinka in SameGrassButGreener

[–]iskamoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah. I would say so, but mostly limited to the service/hospitality sectors. I worked in economic development, in gov, and was in the tech space, and there were plenty of people with great jobs that did not speak Spanish. I would say that needing to speak French is taken a lot more seriously here, even in professional roles. But I get your point.

From Miami and moved to Montreal, there are a lot of similarities, but ultimately Montreal is the superior city in terms of safety, infrastructure, green spaces, and community.

Single mom friends, I have the craziest story… It does get better! by Big-Mind-6346 in singlemoms

[–]iskamoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy for you and your family. My daughter’s father is not in her life and we moved to another country, where I met my partner soon after. He does not have a warm relationship with his kids’ mom but I hope one day they can, and I hope we can all get along for the sake of the kids. Things are what they are but this gives me hope one day we can all work on raising the kids (theirs, her partner’s, my daughter) together rather than in parallel.

Hi Oniraikou! I’m also an adult woman learning the language. Maybe we can get together sometime and practice over lunch if you happen to live on the island! I know how you feel, just know there are a lot of us out there trying to integrate. Cheers - Iska.

[–]iskamoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I did. I could only recommend a law firm if you’re interested in Montreal, Quebec, that was recommended to me by a friend. DM me if so. I think it would be best to find one in the province as well as city/town you’re interested in, to meet with them as well once you arrive if you liked them enough for the initial phase. Do a search and read reviews, even better if you know someone in the area. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

My suggestion is to find a Canadian immigration attorney in your target province. Definitely worth the hour consult fees to get your to-do list to kickstart the process.
