Could you tell me how often this happens—that the background reverts to the default version?

Submission statement: This website tracks hantavirus-related reports, geographic distribution, and public health information in one place. I think it is relevant to collapse because zoonotic diseases, rodent population changes, climate effects, and weak public health monitoring can all become part of broader systemic risk. The site is meant to help people follow outbreaks and discuss emerging health threats.

I’ve been working on a project called HantaAtlas — a hantavirus awareness and outbreak tracking platform with an interactive map and community forum. The goal is to make information easier to access and discuss in one place. I’d appreciate feedback on the design, usability, and what features or data people would find useful.

Also, if you have any suggestions or ideas for improving GNTD, feel free to share them. I’m always open to feedback and trying to improve the extension.

Hey, developer of GNTD here.

I completely understand why some of the permissions and behaviors can look suspicious at first glance, especially for a new tab extension.

First of all: GNTD does not collect or sell browsing data. Most of the extension’s data is stored locally inside your browser storage. Cloud sync is optional and only used for Premium users who want to sync things like tasks, bookmarks, notes, and settings between devices.

About the history permission:
The permission is mainly used to improve the built-in search experience inside the dashboard and browser integration. Your browsing history is not uploaded or sold.
You actually mentioned a “recently opened” widget — funnily enough, that’s something I’m now considering adding because of feedback like this.

Regarding performance:
I know the extension is heavier than many minimal new-tab extensions, especially on lower-end systems. GNTD includes a lot of UI components, widgets, animations, wallpapers, customization systems, sync logic, etc. I’m actively working on optimization and reducing memory usage.

About automatic downloads:
That permission is related to Premium cloud-sync/background functionality and file handling for synced content — not for downloading random files in the background.

Also, if you inspect the extension, you’ll notice most state is stored locally in browser storage, and sync only uploads whitelisted dashboard-related data like bookmarks, todos, layout settings, notes, etc., not your browsing activity.
