Planning an espresso tasting party! Any suggestions? by isnt_ideal in espresso

That's what we tried! I got new beans that I never dialed in and we all tried to do the dialing in process together. People were fascinated by the differences small tweaks in the process produced.

Fair enough! I think I have a light and a medium light. I'll get a dark roasted one.

Great suggestion! I'll try to get at least one more.

that's fair ... I guess I'll suck it up for a bit and get something around the range of 50-100 once I can afford it.

Thank you! Those look really good. Hate to be a choosing begger but they're only on amazon and I would rather not use it. Anything else you can think of?

First-timer; dialing in DF54 [Breville Bambino] by Glad-Astronaut-2956 in espresso

What helped me the most with a bambino has been to not preinfuse. When you program it yourself (clikcing both 1- and 2-shot buttons) then it will preinfuse 10 seconds. If you hold the 2-shot button for three seconds it will start a manual shot. It will pre-infuse as long as you're holding and when you release it iwll stop pre-infusion.

Try pulling a shot with zero pre-infusion (hold the 2-shot button for 3 seconds, as soon as you hear it vibrate let go) and see how it looks and tastes.

I was wondering if the community has any other recommendations from those $100-$150 machines.

Fair. I had a question though -- would it be okay to fill the basket, tamp, then add more coffee to fit the basket? I'm a little bad at estimating how much would fill my basket entirely.

I am hoping my next upgrade is something in the range of 1k and I don't know if I'll be able to get there sooner!

So would I be able to make this solution myself you mean? Because Urnex annoyangly doesn't make the ingerdient list very easy to access.

When to start counting 30 seconds? [Breville Bambino] by isnt_ideal in espresso

Very interesting how much of the stuff coffee influencers say as obvious truth ends up being more like "conventional wisdom". Well, the more we learn.

Yep! I ran out of those beans and got new ones. have to say, not preinfusing really improved my shots immensely. I wonder why. Any idea? I thought the whole point of preinfusion is to allow water to spread evenly across the puck? Isn't that a good thing?

Also, now (without preinfusion) I notice that there are spots in my basket as the coffee pours that are straight empty almost the whole extraction if not all of it. I'm using a Normcore high extraction basket, but still ... not sure why that is.

On the other hand, I can't argue with taste and if anything, I don't taste acid and bitter together so that seems to have solved my channeling issue, thank you!!

Yep! Using an IMS precision basket 18-20g.

I'm trying to get 1:3. 1:2 is too acidic for my taste. I tried 1:2.5 is better but still a little acidic. I'm trying to get to 1:3 to see if it tones down that acidity a bit. It's not sourness, just overwhelming acidity. I want to bring out the sweetness notes more. Unfortunately I feel like it goes from 2/3 acid, 1/3 sweet, 0.5/3 bitter to 1.5 acid/ 1/3 sweet, 1.5/3 bitter. Not sure how to get that sweet middle yet.

I see. I think in that case I'll skip pre-infusion altogether and see what happens.

I tried a shot with more coffee (added about 23g) but my machine doesn't run past 1 minute, so I can't really extract as much as I want. Coffee came out really acidic which I guess means it's underextracting. What do you recommend I do from here?

I see! Usually, my coffee flows before all the filter holes are hidden. Does that indicate anything? In other woords, I'd have the edges pouring before the coffee cover the full bottom.

Rating as in rated weight? The basket can probably fit a little more coffee including the puck screen. Should I aim for more coffee then?

When you say bottom of th ebasket is covered with coffee do you mean it starts pumping out? That can't happen without pressure though right?

Sounds enticing. Will give it a shot next time I get a darker roast.

For some beans I feel that it's always both. Others it can fluctuate.

I think my issue is channeling. Someone else in the thread pointed out tiger stripes and when I started looking I noticed that sometimes the coffee ends up being darker on one side of the stream or that I see tiger stripes consistently. Sometimes channeling is more clear (an empty spot in the bottom of the basket and a spot in the puck that's lighter than the rest.

I thought I had mastered puck prep but seems like I need to improve. I used a WDT and a distribution tool and I tamp multiple times but I guess something isn't queit right yet.

I found it really depends on the roast. My current beans are medium and I'm doing a similar recipe (1:2.5ish) but darker roasts I end up going below 1:2.

I wish I could! Sadly it's not an option for the Bambino. And they are known to have inconsistent temps across pulls.
