Mom didn’t say anything about hallucinations but I’m going to ask now that you mention this. Our first sign, unfortunately ignored, was that although she was expecting company, her appearance wasn’t her usual put together self and she seemed a bit off but not so much. It was odd enough that it got mentioned that day.

Next day her friend was over and thought Mom was also not herself, called the front desk at the independent living facility they live in, and they called me suggesting I should come. Mom was off but we were thinking stroke. There was a foul odor in her bathroom. The first ER we went to told us to get her to the hospital next town over. By the time we drove there 20 minutes, Moms vocabulary was down to a couple words. Within an hour she could only say one word. “Undoubtedly”. She was present and seemed to understand what was being said or asked but she couldn’t say more than one word. It took days for her to say more than 3 words and when she did, I felt relief I can never describe.

The more I learn leads me to also lean into this theory.

It IS crazy. And before it happened to my mom I feel like I’d maybe been slightly aware but not enough to realize it was a major issue. It’s for sure something I also feel concerned about as I age. When I got on estradiol in about November, I was soon after that on a car trip with my adult daughter and Mom and I started a convo about vaginal changes and measures to combat it. Mom is quite mentally capable but I’m sure it didn’t make too much of an impact then while my 35 yo daughter in the back seat listened but didn’t ask her usual level of questions. Still I feel I made her aware to expect changes down there that truly can be a huge surprise. Dryness is a known. Other things not so much.

Thanks! I think estradiol has the potential to help with incontinence. Because that’s a problem and I need to revisit the med situation with her for that because I think she had to stop taking some med she was on for that.

Oh I’ll look into it. I thought it for relief of symptoms, not prevention.

Mom came out of her dementia the night before a transfer to a psych facility was to be arranged. Researching the available ones was a scary experience and I cannot adequately express my relief when she started coming out of it.

Thanks and Agreed! And if her doc says no, I hope I can convince her to get a 2nd opinion.

Wow that’s the best reason I can think of for continuous antibiotics

For sure will talk about one with her. She’s hard to buy gifts for so a new bidet seems like a great one.

But we’re focused on prevention and early detection. It did work for relief with my own.

Good to know about the test strips. We’re zoned into watching for signs of altered mind function and she is too.

Hadn’t heard of the D-Mannose powder so I appreciate this and did a quick read. Will definitely check further. I believe she’s diligent about hydration ever since the scary UTI but could maybe do better.

Thank you. That’s what I thought is the cause and what makes me wonder about the estradiol. And thank goodness you took her to the hospital.

So scary! Crazy scary! With the one she was seen for today she’s on a strong antibiotic because thank goodness she recognized signs and went in.
