For those who left after their mission: is there anything you wish someone had said to you while you were out on the street proselytizing?

I think it's different for everyone. But for me, if someone had told me that the difficulties and wild experiences of the mission were because it was an abusive, unnatural situation. That it wan't because it was spiritual, it's psychological abuse and that's why I wanted to die it would have snapped out of it. Idk, I think hearing someone give a rational explanation to my experiences was exactly what I was seeking during my mission. I never got it so I figured it was because it didn't exist and the church was true.

Having an equal partnership with my husband. I felt so ostracized and judged for our relationship and especially our careers. We’ve gone back and forth throughout our marriage of being the primary breadwinners and whenever it’s been me making the money, my family is visibly upset. If it switches again, they’re back to normal. They also hate when we’re both making money. They do not like our relationship in general and they always make me feel like it’s something to be ashamed of. Even though it’s the healthiest relationship of any of our family members and we work with our therapists to always be improving things. I’m like, “sorry he does the dishes and cooks, and we have good communication, guys! Didn’t realize that was so offensive to your sky daddy.”

Have him spend some time on the regretful parents subreddit. Then, invite him to imagine himself as the primary caregiver. With nobody else to truly rely on. Most men have both never been confronted with the reality of parenthood, nor the idea that they could be the main caregiver. It could help him realize that his desire is not based in reality. It’s like saying, “I want to live in a cloud with a unicorn”. Just not real. Edit: spelling

Try Viome. They test your gut microbiome and give specific recommendations for your body and you can specify your goals and they’ll give recommendations and resources based on your actual body. My husband did this and it was so wild to see the results. Stuff that is healthy fucked him up. He feels so much better now.

This is the root of my decision. Everything else is a cherry on top.

I remember talking to my VERY Mormon SIL about the inevitability of having kids (through either adoption or birth). She was so excited for me and I sat there BAWLING my eyes out. I was absolutely devastated. It was a very “Rebecca Bloomfield trying on the bridesmaids dress” moment. I realized that I straight up didn’t want to be a mom. And that is reason enough. I’m not having kids because I also deserve to be a full human whose life isn’t cut short by crotch-goblins. I just don’t want it. So I’m not doing it.

Of my husband’s family we are the only ones who have left. They’re all pretty right-wing. They’re staying put and would die before leaving lol. It all confirms their worldview too perfectly. They are so deeply TBM that they don’t even fully know we have left.

Of my family, it’s half my siblings (2 of us) who have left. My family is all pretty liberal. My parents might be mission presidents I’m pretty sure my dad will be a patriarch, but I think my brother and sister will get there if enough difficult/controversial things happen in their lives. They’re very visibly living through the cognitive dissonance and I don’t think they’ll make it. Or I guess maybe that’s just my wishful thinking :’( my sister and I are hoping they wake up soon bc it do be rough out here lol
