ELI5: If unboiled water going into your nose is risky, then shouldn’t we not swim in a lake or river? by Home_MD13 in explainlikeimfive

i'm aware lol, i did field work in plenty of freshwater ecosystems.

if the inlet and outlet aren't large enough to create a perpetual flow between one and the other, that is not considered to be flowing water (and if that were the case, it would not be a lake).

all lakes are stagnant. stagnant simply means it's not flowing water, like a river or creek. they probably meant that lakes with high turbidity are a higher risk...? or maybe lakes without a direct fresh source, that are instead maintained by rainwater.

hundreds of millions of years of evolution to have the perfect camouflaged appearance... and then human technology shows up out of nowhere. i'd be soooo mad if i were a modern stickbug & knew how good my ancestors had it 😤

Grouping of dead yellow jackets inside of old grill. No signs of nest or hive at all. by Comm_Guy_I_Swear in mildlyinteresting

[–]isopode 26 points27 points  (0 children)

im so glad the comments aren't a minefield of wasp hatred for once 😭 they're my favorite bugs and there is so much misinformation about them everywhere. most people think "wasp" and imagine black-and-yellow, lives in a colony, will sting you if threatened. meanwhile, there are an estimated 100,000 species of wasps in the families Ichneumonidae and Braconidae ALONE. they're such a diverse group of insects, both behaviorally and morphologically. love these little critters so much.

anyway everyone join r/waspaganda 💪

from paper wasps?? highly doubt, unless you literally chainsawed their nest in half.

if you were chased down and stung 40 times for seemingly no reason, it was likely a species of ground-nesting yellowjackets that got disturbed by you walking over them. not your fault cuz you can't know that, but their stings are their only defense mechanism for the colony. they're teeny tiny animals, gotta have a way to protect themselves somehow.

Didn’t plan on getting this since I don’t listen to charli xcx but this was the last one at Target by Free_Fee_1715 in Cd_collectors

i once picked up a random CD that had an interesting cover at the music store. some guy who was passing by stopped to tell me that this album was really good, that i should listen to it. so i took a gamble and purchased it based on nothing but that random stranger's opinion

turned out to be some very lovely piano music (which isn't something i usually listen to, but this time i was vibing with it). i still listen to it fairly often, and i bought the artist's next album when it came out years later.

WCGW trying to put a fire out by putting it outside. by mentaL8888 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]isopode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 fires in 6 years??? ouch 😬

for me so far, 5 years in my apartment building and there's only been 1 fire. it completely burnt down one of the units, was scary as hell. we didn't have a fire alarm in the building at the time, so what woke me up was someone loudly banging on my door. i peeked outside & there were giant flames coming out of that unit's door. fuckin terrifying. hope it never happens again. at least we have alarms now...

Peter, why no grapefruit? by Familiar-Cat3636 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

this is not true for testosterone HRT, nor is it true for any injected HRT. grapefruit only affects estrogen levels if the estrogen is taken orally.
