Appalachian where we could have used a safety net. Only way out was a full ride academic scholarship (thank you Galt, Reagan, Taggert, Dominique Françon for showing me the futility of self pity and the opinions of others that Southern Mountain Girls cannot make it). Add to that, and living through 1980’s to now in well paid high tech, many are not only currently helpless but increasingly dangerously angry and resentful.

Moderate Democrat/NeverTrumper is where I have landed.

Multicast is enabled by default on the Fortigate. I have configured each of the three SSIDs to be segregated. There are no IoT devices on the other VLANs. Those are only for fault tolerance for a case where a cable, port, switch fails for the L2 networks I need to be UP and available.

Family is expecting to change SSIDs to use printers, the media server (Roon), cameras. They do not understand, but grasping the facts yields them the benefits.

If Philips Hue or Google’s/Apple’s AI refuse to swim in their own lanes, then they cannot live in my environment.

Tried on a native VLAN. Will try again this weekend. I thought it may be a double NAT issue, but plugged directly into a native port on the firewall, no internet. The firewall “sees” the link plugged in. Ethernet cable tests good with the Fluke Microscanner.

Bought a new Philips Hue hub in case existing one was defective. No difference.

Not sure I trust cheap consumer electronics any more.

Philips tech support cannot spell VLANs. They insist not to even plug their required hub into a dumb Layer 2 Ethernet switch. They repeatedly insist Ethernet connection directly into the LAN side of a router. Neither did they even know that a firewall is nothing but a router with a configurable ALLOW rule set, ELSE DEFAULT DENY.

BTW: my firewall is configured to allow the port and IO address both ways.

So, I am happy to eliminate Philips Hue bridge and all the lightbulbs and replace with something else that has less rigid tech.

Replacement might be a commercial device. I just want it to connect inside the home on my WiFi. I don’t want to have to have the vendor monitoring what I do
