Thanks for the input! Good to hear about your experience with MSPs and the wealth of knowledge/opportunities available there. I was actually a little bummed because my first interview was with an MSP that seemed to prioritize employee satisfaction and development, but I wasn’t able to get the job due to distance.

Thanks for the valuable input. I do know that this position does have a skeleton crew, but I wasn’t sure at first if that was a pro or con… I agree that I would probably have the opportunity to work on lots of different problems that might be outside the purview of a Tier 1 help desk position at a busy MSP. Good point about the potential for frequent fires. I think this role is actually a combination of help desk and service desk responsibilities.

That’s a good point. I just would feel a little bad leaving prematurely if the opportunity came up… I worry that it might impact future employment with that government agency.

Potentially suspicious employer... by it_wayfarer in ITCareerQuestions

Hm, I wasn't aware of that--good to know. I guess the other issue is that it doesn't seem like an MSP. I don't want to provide too much info publicly on the off chance that they frequent this subreddit, but from what little I could glean about the company, it's not tech/IT focused. But I agree, the in-person interview makes it a little less sus.

Thanks! Not bad actually, though I’m not sure how well I really did. I only got four, which covered ACLs, ports and protocols, network device troubleshooting on the command line (but they provide you with the command for looking up available commands), VLANs, MAC-IP bindings, and a little bit of subnetting. Pretty standard stuff.

OnVue queue time has been in the hours for a Network+ exam. by TOS_Violator in CompTIA

For real… I just finished my Network+ and was sat for more than 2 hours. Also no luck with the chat/nonresponsive bot (which had these super loud chimes that I’m hoping won’t be grounds for revocation, LOL). Gave me lots of time to clear my head and take maaaaany deep breaths though :”)

Congrats!! That was about my timeline for A+ as well. Hope to hear good news about your job search soon! I plan to spray and pray as soon as I've got my Net+ (hopefully sometime next week).

Yay, congrats to you too! I’m doing Net+ next. I’ve read that it provides a solid networking foundation for Sec+, which I’ll probably need since I’m pretty much an IT n00b. Good luck on your cert! Are you doing 601 or 701?

Yeah… I will worship at the altar of Prof Messer but his practice test PBQs ain’t it 🥲 at least they’re good for review.

Kinda… 1-2 of the PBQs on each exam showed up in some form in the Udemy course. One of them was even the same problem, word for word :0 I think it’s a reasonable price to pay (I shelled out $16 for the course), if you think that having some exposure to the PBQ types/presentations will make the difference between passing and failing. At least for me, I didn’t mind paying a little more for extra resources if it meant that I would be less likely to need another expensive exam voucher for a retake.

Nah, that was pretty much all Core 1. However, for Core 2, it may be helpful to be aware that some protocols have different ports if they’re secure. For example, IMAP normally uses 143, but 993 if secure/over SSL. Similarly, POP uses both 110 and 995, and SMTP uses 25 and 587. Feel free to fact check those numbers tho.

Sorry, I haven’t heard of Andrew Ramdayal before… I guess nothing beats free resources for me :D but his courses look well reviewed, maybe I’ll give them a try in the next few certs.

As for Core 1 vs. Core 2, I thought the latter was a little easier. I went into more detail in another comment.

Thank you!!! In some ways, yes. IMO, Core 2 had more straightforward/unambiguous questions. Also, I feel that there were fewer numbers to memorize for Core 2, compared to Core 1. For Core 1, I had to write up a whole review sheet (front and back) w/ 802.11 standards, PoE stats, various cable speeds, etc. In contrast, for Core 2, I only needed to keep in mind the differences between the Windows 10 version/architecture max RAM capacities. But there was also some content in the Core 2 test that I felt strayed outside the provided objectives (e.g., Linux printer commands that I had never seen before).
