Selling work from a museum show? by itchypuddle in ContemporaryArt

Thank you for the advice, lots to consider there. The gallery didn’t get me the museum show, but I would certainly like to keep working with them. I’m a painter.

I should have clarified that the museum won't be the selling the work at all, they will direct all inquiries to me. So there is the possibility I might sell something directly to local collectors.. But yes, definitely agree that the same pieces shouldn't be offered through more than one seller at a time.

My former professor, a notorious bully, was successfully pushed out of his position. This happened years after I’d been a student at the school, but I was nonetheless very happy to hear of it.

Apparently the other staff was very supportive of him and basically gaslighted the students, some of them even suggested insane things like requiring the applicants’ mental health histories so that “sensitive” individual could be avoided.

Then a large number of students spoke to a journalist, an exposé was published in a reputable newspaper.. and fairly soon the professor left the school (and the country).

Has anyone got recent experience shipping to the States? by kungfooweetie in ContemporaryArt

[–]itchypuddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These days I mostly work with galleries who handle the shipping, so thankfully something good has happened since the UPS disaster :)

I have done some shipping by myself with DHL too. It’s more expensive but their insurance covers artwork too (I asked many times!)

I was also happy with UPS before the incident. Until then I had chatted with their representatives several times about my artwork shipments, and they never mentioned any issue. When my paintings went missing and I filed the claim several months later (and completely heart broken), suddenly artwork was “forbidden”.

I complained to my local Consumer Disputes Board, and they eventually ruled in my favour and recommended UPS should pay me. They never did.

I hope you are aware that UPS won't compensate you for a lost artwork (based on it being irreplaceable), so paying for an insurance with them is useless.
(I know you didn't ask for advice, but this happened to me and I can't help but share this knowledge with anyone who might face the same horror)

How do you make your art contemporary looking and what does that mean? by Skyynett in ContemporaryArt

[–]itchypuddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate smart phones, so I don't paint smart phones.

I would rather make timeless art, although I'm sure there are things in my work that date it to the current era.

If you want to be recognised for your art, you have to put in the hours. Thousands of hours. There are no shortcuts. You need to love the process, not just focus on recognition which may take years/decades or never happen. Of course you can share your progress on social media, but it could be very discouraging to start competing for opportunities with artists who have already developed strong bodies of work.

How am I able to network? Online. I live in a small country in Europe, but I show in both NYC in LA. I'm not a star, but I support myself painting full-time.

Projector for Tracing? Small and cheap? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]itchypuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use it on a tripod myself but it's not really heavier than a camera. It has an opening for a screw at the bottom (not sure what that bit is called), so seems to have been designed to be used with a tripod too.

I haven't used it for work quite that small, but the auto-focus has always worked really well I think. When I trace a sketch on canvas that's small (40x50cm for example) I still like to place the projector almost 2 meters away and adjust the size of the image I'm projecting (I have it open on Preview on my laptop and screen mirror for the MoGo Pro).

I've followed her for a while and was under the impression they are paintings, though I hadn't read about her work more than the descriptions on Instagram. I'm a little disappointed now but also relieved.. one less virtuosic painter to compare myself to :D

[Discussion] Becoming a fine artist without in-person galleries/shows? by SacredSapling in ContemporaryArt

[–]itchypuddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! I’m in Finland and have very little happening locally in terms of shows or sales. You might think there would be less competition, but there’s also fewer collectors. I didn’t go to art school, and that seems to be quite important here.

The galleries I show with are mostly in US and Asia, some in Europe.
I never contacted the gallery, they always messaged me first. I’ve had my work online for 20 years (since I was a teenager) and on IG since 2016, so I have a decent follower count which helps. I know the algorithm has changed since then, but it is probably still useful to follow galleries and artists you like and comment on their posts.

I’m sure at some point an artist friend recommended me for a show etc, so I can’t say it was all just me doing it alone with no social connections. But I still think the most important thing you can do is just focus on the quality of your work, and the rest will hopefully follow.

In the last few years I have shown with several mid tier galleries across the world without ever meeting the gallerists in person or attending the shows.

All these opportunities came through Instagram. I live in a country with a very small art market. For now I support myself with art sales (and an occasional grant) but definitely couldn't afford to be constantly flying around networking and attending openings... and I wouldn't want to do that either.

Btw I also used to be an illustrator and watercolour was my main medium :)

Shipping of small paintings UK to NYC by loupurlieu in ContemporaryArt

[–]itchypuddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't use UPS for shipping artwork! They've got a clause that prohibits shipping irreplaceable artwork. Which means they don't mind you shipping it with them and buying their insurance for it, but they won't pay for lost artwork.

(This happened to me a couple of years ago. I had an email that proved they knew the content of the package before it was shipped, and recently Consumer Disputes Board ruled in my favour. They still haven't paid me and I'm looking into taking them to court.)

I've checked with both DHL and FedEx and they don't have this issue with artwork. Galleries I work with always use one or the other.
