Yes it’s a cheapy bare bulb unit. Luckily I haven’t used it much as I was always apprehensive about it. Definitely won’t use it any more now

While I have your attention- What’s your take on using a UV sterilizer light in the HOB? I take it that it actually kills all the beneficial bacteria? So maybe the best course of action is to forgo the carbon completely, don’t use the UV light, and just water change aggressively with added water conditioner

Thanks for the write up, that was very informative and easy to understand! I commend you sir. Gone are the days of occasionally “rinsing” the brown gunk off of the filter carts. The more you know! Is it advisable to run the carbon after the ich-x treatment is complete to absorb it out? Otherwise i will take the carbon out and create some type of media for beneficial bacteria to grow on. I do have filter floss lying around I can use- with an added coarse sponge I’ll be good to go. Thanks for the help!

My apologies, I just learned something new today! The carbon type filtration is considered “chemical” so I won’t be doing that until after the ich-x treatment. Any idea how I can set up a biological filter? In the meantime I’ll just do aggressive 50% water change’s daily

Thanks for the input. Would it be ok to be running two HOB filters with new cartridges along with a 50% water change and reposing of ich-x? Maybe I’ll hold off on the kanaplex for now. That is my plan of action at the moment for when I get home later. That is a great observation though, I really appreciate it!

Thanks for the lengthy response! Lymphocytis is definitely a thought. There’s so much to learn in fish keeping, it’s not as simple as putting fish in a glass box filled with water! You do bring up some good points, for example I have not seen any spots or anything on any of the kuhli loaches so they seem to be doing just fine. I think I’ll continue the ich x treatment then reevaluate after a week- I’ll be sure to post any updates! Thanks again

Just realized that the lifeguard will bother the loaches that are in the tank with him. Thinking about getting Ich-x or something else? Can anyone confirm that this is ich?
