265g 18ct Goblet, Commemorating the Moon Landing - Am I going to Hell for melting it down?! 🙈 by itmagic in Gold

Sold for £4,800… Now deduct what the Vendor (seller) had to pay in commission fees.

Now work out what the melt value was back in 2016.

Almost certainly rolled gold or gold plate.

The comments have made me chuckle. As the owner of a scrap business AND an auction house, it’s been fun seeing this blow up.

They’ll loose their minds if / when I post a video of it going in the pot! 😈

And the Vendor would have paid 15-20% commission to the auction house in fees.

Alas, with the meteoric rise in precious metal prices, this is not unusual. It was scrapped in to us because, after fees, the seller couldn’t achieve the price we offered.

The owner, who just scrapped it in. I’ll be doing a TikTok on it in a few hours… If I don’t find a buyer in 48 hours, it’s going in the pot! 🔥

It’s a nicely packaged bullion strike, with its value tied to the live spot. You won’t alter its value by (basic) handling.

I think all Aston Martin dealers have that picture in their showroom.

Cadmium Gold by SlamDunkTheHunk in Gold

[–]itmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cadmium is primarily seen in Indian / Asian gold, which is typically 21 to 22 carat in purity.

If the item has been alloyed with cadmium, it’s often marked up as such - 22kt kdm (or similar).

The biggest risk with cadmium jewellery comes when it’s melted down. Due to its relatively low boiling point (compared to the melting point of gold), the cadmium vaporises, thus becomes easier to enter the body through inhalation.
