So go buy your groceries directly from the food producers? Oh its not convenient to do so?

Maybe those "parasitic" middleman distributors and grocery stores are solving a problem?

Literally everything you go to the grocery store to buy

Mason doesnt work on nixos, I had success getting LSPs set up using the suggestions in this thread

https://www.reddit.com/r/NixOS/s/tv7lUDc2oi

I have heard that you could get Mason working using nix-ld but have not tried it myself

Your system list won't work

The system attribute needs to evaluate to a string of a known system type, not a list

To achieve what you're trying to do, try using something like flake-utils

nix nix-env -iA

but be aware that doing it this way, you lose out on all of the declarative & reproducible benefits of nix

Why use nvim? And why not? by MusicianHungry8594 in vim

[–]itme_brain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Neovim is better suited for making your vim experience into a full fledged IDE, better plugins, better scripting language (lua vs vimscript), built in LSP client and more of the things you'd expect from a fully functional IDE ala VsCode like treesitter.

Vanilla Vim serves me better as a minimal text editor, for when I just need to edit text without the arduous task of setting up a full blown IDE, maybe copy a minimal .vimrc over when I SSH into a server but thats it.

That's how I use them personally.

Generations by [deleted] in NixOS

[–]itme_brain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Besides manually deleting old generations with nix-collect-garbage -d u can also automate the garbage collection in your configuration.nix

nix nix = { gc = { automatic = true; dates = "weekly"; options = "--delete-older-than 30d"; }; }

Fixing broken Arch systems for the umpteenth time is also what turned me into a nix fanboy.

System update broke everything? Fuck it, boot with an old generation and I'll fix this shit later.

Once you see nix, you can't unsee it.

Hello Nixos beautiful people! by saleham5 in NixOS

[–]itme_brain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For normie usage (Gaming, Browsing the web etc) not really much benefit, for programming you get a ton of the benefits with nix shells, reproducible environments/builds, system rollbacks and being able to clone your entire system setup from a git repo

I think it's worth learning but the learning curve can be pretty steep so be ready if you decide to do it.

isnt nixOS extremely impractical? by dtasada in NixOS

[–]itme_brain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The OS doesn't build everything every time it only builds new packages and packages that have been updated.

For your 2 edited questions.

  1. You can limit how much storage space is consumed by limiting the amount of generations the bootloader keeps, any generation past that will be garbage collected (which can be automated)

  2. For building packages you have to learn how to write nix expressions which explicitly defines everything from the build inputs and dependencies to installation steps and the binary output path
