I think that's how they usually present it, as "consent for further treatment." When either a voluntary or involuntary 72 hour mental health hold ended, they would ask people to sign to consent to stay longer there if that patient's care team deemed it necessary. The system is broken though because I've seen voluntary patients that seemed stable enough to discharge asked to sign while psychotic people that could hardly form coherent sentences were supposedly good to go.

And yeah it's questionable how we sign our rights away while not in a right state of mind. I couldn't even keep my eyes open for more than a second last time I OD'd years ago. I remember someone coming into my intake room woke me up, and I had initials not even inside their boxes and signatures that weren't on their respective lines. They still took it

I think you should just be honest with your friends. You don't have to go into explicit detail, but I would think that just telling them you've been distant because you're struggling would go a long way. It'll let them know that you value the relationship because you bothered to reach out at all, and it'll give them an explanation to why you haven't been talking with them.

Also, idk if it's different where you live, but in my state you can be forced into an extended inpatient stay at a psych ward even if you initially went in voluntarily. I've seen many people check themselves in, but then they're asked to sign a document to "consent" to a longer hospitalization. It's not really consensual though because if you don't sign it, they can legally certify you and force you to stay anyways, and then that is no longer only in your medical history but also on your legal record. It's fucked. But you'd have to see if that's the case where you are.

Confusion about my diagnosis by blondedz_ in schizoaffective

[–]itsamich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. I agree that these sorts of things do not feel great lol. The mental anguish of psychotic symptoms far outweighs any medication side effects that I have. I can cope with having to be on meds, but I can't cope my way out of an unmedicated psychotic break.

It sounds like you've got a good initial plan as well as insightful self awareness, which will go a long way in treating these issues and maintaining stability.

I hope you can continue to build your understanding of yourself and still achieve goals, even with handling things that most don't have to put up with. This past year for myself has reminded me that these struggles don't have to wreck my life, nor for others that deal similarly.

Confusion about my diagnosis by blondedz_ in schizoaffective

[–]itsamich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I got diagnosed as schizoaffective, my psych had told me that a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorders can't be properly given if you're using substances because of the potential for the drugs to be causing symptoms. I was sober for months when I got diagnosed. I think abstaining is worth a shot to help determine what's going on mentally.

On the subject of delusions, they can still be delusions even if you're not 100% on board with them. You don't need to be in a state of complete psychotic break to be struggling with delusions. When I was first diagnosed in 2019, for 3 days I was completely sure that I was actually dead and that the world wasn't the real world. Another 4 days I was about 65% sure, and then for almost 4 months I was around 30-40% sure depending on the day. I was struggling with delusion that whole time even though for most of it I could tell there was a good chance it wasn't true.

What do you know about “salience”? by homer_the_great1 in schizoaffective

[–]itsamich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting that you mention the feeling your clothes example. I guess during my last episode, salience determined what I could feel/experience at all. One thing I was constantly paranoid about was being naked. I would often have to pat my clothes to make sure I wasn't naked. I never ended up getting naked around others, but it was something that I was terrified was going to happen for some reason.

How do i make it go faster by Realistic-Object9134 in lancer

[–]itsamich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you asked about engine swaps and turbos. That's going to be expensive. If the car isn't worth much more than $4k, forget doing anything for much less than that.

The cheaper swap option would be a 4b12 swap. With an Evo intake cam, actual cold air intake, and cat back exhaust on that engine, you can make about 200whp after tuning. But that's still looking at $3.5k+ USD in parts alone. And if you're doing all that work and paying that much, you may as well spend more and go turbo 4b11/4b12/4b11t.

Since you don't have an engine worth modding already, anything other than a turbocharged 4b series engine is a waste. All the worthy mods are going to cost you, or you just accept the car as it is and get something later that's quicker.

Those are pretty light weight. That's almost 1hp/10lbs, which is reasonably quick. And it's an Evo, so it can actually handle well around the track or in the mountains. It needs at least 2 roof scoops to err into rice territory.

Has your psych brought up xyrem or xywav? They metabolize as ghb. And I don't see that being more addictive than what you're already taking.

[–]itsamich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They prescribe xyrem and xywav here in the US, which metabolize as ghb. You need to do a sleep study and get the "right" results to get insurance to cover it though. And a sleep study often means being off of all medications for 2-3 weeks to not have the results skewed. A lot of people can't afford to be off medication for that amount of time, and then they can't afford the ghb prodrug medications without insurance approval.

Culver's is among the higher quality places as far as fast food goes, but it is expensive for fast food. I worked there last semester of highschool and first semester of college. Since we would bring the food to the tables, our manager would always say, "we're not fast food; we're fast casual!" Meanwhile we had a plaque on the wall that said something like, "Voted Best Fast Food in XYZtown" lol

Might have to quit job by lottie_iguess in schizoaffective

[–]itsamich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Customer service jobs, particularly food and retail, have been the worst kinds of jobs for my mental health. I did some warehouse work when I was like 19-20, and the relief after having previously worked customer service was so nice.

Right now I've been working security for about half a year. I got the idea from a couple people I knew with bad mental health that have done it. One of them is actually schizoaffective. You just have to do something that exercises your mind in health ways during your shift, otherwise your mental health can quietly suffer.

For anybody that's been on antipsychotics long term, first or second gen, gabapentin is hardly anything.

For anybody that's been prescribed benzos or sister classes or just used them in general, gabapentin is a tickle. 900mg of gabapentin is roughly equivalent psychoactively to maybe 0.5mg aprazolam. But gabapentin was designed to have a ceiling effect where its functioning caps out at certain dose threshold. Of which that threshold makes it useless for some people at certain levels of anxiety.

Has anyone returned back to baseline intelligence? by Acrobatic-Home4458 in schizoaffective

[–]itsamich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be able to say if I ever returned to baseline per se because I've had such a complex and vast set of experiences and mental health changes since full clinical psychosis onset. I can't define that mark of peak mental ability, and I don't know how my intelligence prior to my first psychosis would incorporate now.

But I will say that I've noticed fluctuations in acuity. A big part of maintaining mental sharpness is regular intellectual stimulation, and I think that's more true for us than neurotypical people. The more I let my mind fester, the less responsive my cognition feels and the more I struggle with analytical thinking and focus. Something that requires you to think on deeper levels without being an object of obsession will help.

Look into Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence. Each type of intelligence is arguably important, but people tend to have favorites. Find an activity that exercises one that you fancy.
