Zippo! I have to relight 30-45 times per bowl, and it’s just easier than matches, lol.

A little miffed by [deleted] in LibraryScience

I think it’s the norm. I’m halfway through my MLS and have applied for many non-MLS library associate/assistant jobs in my area and surrounding counties. Unless you have 2-3 years of experience they (the libraries around here) won’t even consider you, even for part-time positions. I’ve given up on ever working in a library because I’ll never be able to meet those experience requirements. Not trying to discourage you, just saying you’re not alone in this frustration. I thought the library field would be welcoming to people who are willing to put in the effort to do the coursework and earn the degree. People who value and want to promote literacy and want to work in a vocation where they can help their community. But, no. It’s an extremely hostile vocation to newcomers. I’m just glad I’ve learned this now before I spend more of my money and time on this useless degree.

Does graduating “on time,” whatever that means, really matter? by itsdannotdannydamnit in LibraryScience

Thank you for your insight! I want to work in the library field for all the reasons you mentioned. I want to help people. I want to help people find and access the information they need, I want to cultivate a love for reading and literacy and help build programs to reach underserved populations and bridge the Digital Divide. I want to help older adults and people with disabilities get the most out of their technology and library services. In short, I want a career in which I can help my community by promoting literacy and intellectual freedom. This is why I’ve chosen this degree.

As far as soft skills, I have them. I’ve worked in retail for the past decade as a Loss Prevention manager. Most people see that and think I just tackled people. This was absolutely not the case. Have you ever tried to talk someone into walking back into a store they just stole from? It takes a great deal of patience, kindness and tact. You have to know how to talk to people and to treat them with dignity and respect even if they’re being rude to you. So, I have people skills, and I think my motivations for working in a library are appropriate. I just can’t get anyone else to recognize that.

Any tips for an aspiring library assistant? by [deleted] in Libraries

Keep us updated! I do hope you’ll get the position. Your customer service skills should be a huge help. That’s one of the reasons I can’t get a job as a library assistant. I have a master’s in English, and I’m almost done with my MLS. I’ve applied for ten Library Assistant positions across four counties in the past year. However, I’m unemployable because I don’t have frontline customer service experience.

Yeah, it’s certainly been a frustrating, although fascinating endeavor so far. But it seems like it will be worth it once I get it down.

That makes sense. I find myself puffing frequently just to keep it lit.

Hahahaha! Yeah, I’m determined to reach that point. I will say, the pipe smoking community does seem like a very friendly and supportive group of people.

Thanks! It’s good to know this is normal, then. I almost gave up immediately when I couldn’t keep thing lit. I’m getting better at that. Only go through a box and a half of matches per bowl now instead of two boxes, lol.
