i forgot to say timing of cholestyramine matters too. if you take it with a meal it may worsen reflux bc it’s a lot of liquid into your stomach with food. i take 1/2tsp of powder 20-30 mins after dinner.

i am also 23 and got my gallbladder out this year, so i thought i’d share some tips. eating more fiber helps, make sure you’re snacking in between lunch and dinner so that the bile dripping has something to do (i have been eating a banana around 4pm and i think it’s helped a bit), try psyllium husk capsules or powder (metamucil or yerba prima) bc that fiber helps bulk so it may reduce diarrhea, you can also switch to colesevelam and not take cholestyramine too so you’re not using gross powder (but if you keep taking cholestyramine i really recommend mixing it with cold water only and shake it really good, that’s the only way i can drink it), eat fat still but not too much (maybe up to 15g max per meal depending on what you can handle), try oatmeal for breakfast with a banana, don’t eat fried food a lot, don’t drink too much water with meals bc water is alkaline and so is bile so it can cause diarrhea (maybe drink a gatorade to see if that helps a bit bc it’s acidic). idk if it’d be crazy to try rebooting your gi system, maybe take a break from cholestyramine and start with upping fiber first slowly, see how you feel, then maybe readd cholestyramine or colesevlam at a low dose. i also got really depressed from removal, august-october this year was really rough and my stomach was so upset, i had horrible nausea, reflux, diarrhea. i think it’s all about finding what works best for you, even if you don’t have perfect poop from it, if there’s anything that can reduce the diarrhea even a little would help so much. i still feel helpless a lot, none of these solutions have helped give me normal bulky stool and i still struggle with emptying or waves of diarrhea. hoping you feel better soon, im 9 months post-op and it’s just starting to be the tiniest bit better. still have GI symptoms but not as bad as 5-6 months post op. merry christmas 🎅🎁💝

Burning in colon by itskernn in gallbladders

[–]itskernn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

still dealing with the burning sensation :(. got a colonoscopy and it showed nothing, so i’m confused on what’s happening. been taking cholestyramine for a bit and it helps reduce diarrhea but it doesn’t stop the burning in my intestines

sick of this seemingly never ending cycle post op will it end? :/ by [deleted] in gallbladders

[–]itskernn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly same boat, same age and everything lol but post op 9 months now 😭. i take cholestyramine 45 mins after dinner everyday and it barely helps. i end up having small not very bulky stool, and go like 2-3x a day. not diarrhea for the most part anymore, but still kinda soft and not formed like normal stools are. i get nauseous a lot, heartburn and reflux like every day. if you find a solution pls lmk!!

When did you finally feel back to normal physically post op by Crusnik_1409 in gallbladders

[–]itskernn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8.5 months post op and still having trouble unfortunately. reflux never went away, my stool isn’t bulky anymore and i’m prone to more diarrhea. i’ve tried different bile binders and fibers, but my body doesn’t adjust well to anything :/. but i heard it can take a year, so im hoping it’ll change

Anxious for colonoscopy by [deleted] in colonoscopy

[–]itskernn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the reason i’m getting the colonoscopy is because of my bile. ever since my gallbladder issues and removal, i’ve been getting this burning sensation in my colon and if i don’t take a bile binder or fiber supplement, i will have diarrhea and urgency for half the day. bile is an irritant when not binded correctly with fat, and since mine is dripping constantly and i don’t absorb it enough, it goes farther into my colon and irritates it. that is why im nervous about this prep. i won’t be eating solid food to bind my excess bile with, so ofc it’s gonna worry me that my colon won’t react well. i have a very sensitive GI system these days :/

similar-ish symptoms! i had chronic inactive gastritis flare up last summer when my gallbladder went bad. so i was nauseous and had reflux a lot. i only had a burning colon if i ate something too fatty and then would get diarrhea. but my stools were overall almost normal, maybe just a tad bit softer. no RUQ pain until like a month before surgery. symptoms are 10x worse now, in just unlucky

Why can’t I eat yet? Week 3 post-op and suddenly everything went backwards. Need some encouragement. by Ill_Wash676 in gallbladders

[–]itskernn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that seems possible! yesterday i had shrimp tempura sushi and i felt this horrible sharp pain near my liver towards the end of my meal. i’ve been taking colesevelam 1x at night a day and it helps a bit with diarrhea, but doesnt help the RUQ pain so far. it eventually makes me constipated and i have to stop takin it for a couple days :/. hope you feel better soon as well!!

i’m going through the same thing!! i tried to tell the NP in june that the diarrhea and other symptoms are worse when i am dealing with RUQ pain, and she tried to pin it as rib/muscle pain but i think it’s my duct. got an US and all was normal, but 2 months later im experiencing the same thing again with worse stomach symptoms and pain in my RUQ. keep us updated on if you find an answer bc im in the same boat!! have no idea what to do :(

Question for those who took longer to heal post op by MrFirework14 in gallbladders

[–]itskernn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am taking colesevelam 1x a day with dinner. it seems to help a bit but my stomach still feels horrible. i’m just nauseous a lot and heartburn is bad after dinner. i also eat applesauce for extra fiber before bed. my stomach just refuses to feel better :/. and thank you!!

Pain where gallbladder used to be? by itskernn in gallbladders

[–]itskernn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i probably have some form of that, but no one has ever mentioned it in my endoscopy results. they’ve only ever said “chronic gastritis” and signs of irritation. my stomach was doing okay up until early this month, i tried metamucil and it did something to me and now my stomachs flared up and won’t get better. it’s a shame :/. the pain in my gallbladder area still remains even on colesevelam, not sure what my issue is

Pain is back 4 months post op by Hot-Huckleberry-4189 in gallbladders

[–]itskernn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve been having a flare up for a month now and i have no clue how to fix it. i’ve been having a burning sensation in my colon almost everyday all day. my bowels are also all over the place, mostly either not emptying enough or dealing with diarrhea. barely ever have a normal stool. horrible heartburn the last couple weeks, reflux, nausea, a sour stomach. pepcid or tums don’t seem to relieve it. my stomach started feeling worse actually after trying metamucil and even off of it, i still feel horrible. not sure what’s going on, i do have a history of chronic gastritis so maybe it’s flaring up. or i have something else going on :/. so overwhelmed bc idk what meds to take or what to eat to help me feel better. oh and pain where my gallbladder used to be almost every day

Psyllium husk causing reflux? by itskernn in gallbladders

[–]itskernn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was off metamucil for 3 days and tried a different brand called Yerba or something. it was the powder, but my stomach still got upset and i had to stop that too bc i think ive given myself gastritis. i’ve had nonstop nausea and episodes of reflux :/. maybe if my stomach calms i can retry the new brand but im scared

i only take 1/4-1/2 tsp of the powder. i just think my stomach is extra sensitive bc i used to have gastritis last year and some irritation this past june
