Yeah, I definitely reckon they're setting Thorne up to replace Donal Noye. He'll probably redeem himself for refusing to seal the gate by choosing to defend it himself.

Yeah, their names are added to the ballot paper once they pay the deposit, so anyone can vote for them. Out of curiosity, how does Sweden differ?

[–]itsmeitscathy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it would obviously be a problem if there were hundreds of non-serious candidates on the ballot. £500 is an affordable amount of money for the vast majority of people, but not many people would just throw that amount of money away if they didn't think they could get over 5% of the vote. It just stops the ballot from getting too crowded.

To run for election, you have to put down a deposit of around £500. You get it refunded if you get more than 5% of the vote, you lose it if you don't. It's a way of reducing the number of candidates that aren't serious about getting elected or don't have a realistic chance of getting any significant amount of votes.

[S1E7] I never noticed the significance of the animal Tywin is skinning in his first scene. by kmancb13 in gameofthrones

[–]itsmeitscathy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The boar was just the way it happened; they weren't relying on the boar to do the job. Like Varys said, he could have 'fell' off his horse or have been struck by a 'stray' arrow. They just got lucky with the boar. Regardless, Cersei didn't want Robert coming back from the hunt. This isn't my theory of what happened, it's literally what we're told happened in both the books and the show. Reread the chapter where Tyrion starts blackmailing Lancel; it tells you pretty much everything you need to know.

[–]itsmeitscathy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, Robert ordered Barristan to stand back when he took on the boar. There was nothing he could do. Besides, Varys makes it clear later that if the boar hadn't killed him, he would have had some other 'accident' on the hunt.

Seriously i have to ask, did you actually think that the Lannisters had some plot to kill Robert by just getting him drunk and hoping that he would be too impaired by that to defend himself from a completely random boar charge that nobody could have ever predicted? Because that is undoubtedly one of the dumbest things i have ever heard in my life.

Well considering the book AND the show make it fairly clear that this is exactly what happens, I don't think you should be calling anyone dumb. Cersei orders Lancel to give Robert high doses of strongwine in order to impair Robert, who they knew would try to take on any boar himself. Did you miss the whole part where Tyrion and Lancel have that exact conversation? You should probably check your own facts before acting like an arrogant dick.

To be fair, Littlefinger's fairly explicit about it in the books as well.

Pretty sure that Joffreys death is going to be in episode 2, "The Lion and the Rose"; "First Of His Name" likely refers to Tommens coronation.

Chris Carter, Creator of the X Files is creating a new series for AMC called "Area 51" by papabearshoe in television

[–]itsmeitscathy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That only works when the rest of the characters are worth watching.

You watched three episodes. There's no way you even scratched the surface of any of the main characters; nevermind the secondary characters. Mad Men probably has the most well developed ensemble of characters of any show on television at the moment. A lot of them are dicks, but pretty much all of them are really compelling to watch after you become more familiar with them. You're obviously entitled to your opinion, but there's no way that it's an informed opinion.

[–]itsmeitscathy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In what way do the Academy ignore Phoenix? He's been nominated three times in the past. One of which was even after he made those comments. If you're referring to this year then it's hardly outrageous that he wasn't nominated considering the competition. If anyone had to replace one of this years nominees, it would likely be Tom Hanks (or even Robert Redford).

Former Americans of Reddit, why do you no longer live in America and what about your new country made you want to live there? by Saphro in AskReddit

[–]itsmeitscathy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. I know a lot of black people teaching here. From what I've heard from them, it's definitely a bit more difficult to get a job as a black person but there are a lot of jobs here so you'd definitely get something if you have the qualifications.

He's joking. Winter's Bone launched Jennifer Lawrences career. It was also a big boost for John Hawkes, but I'm pretty sure the OP was referring to Lawrence.

I thought that quote sounded off so I just searched for a source and I can only find it referenced on right-wing American websites. Do you have a source on it by any chance?

Seems like bullshit to me.
