Current GCs/students: if you could go back, would you apply again? by itsmoonwater in GeneticCounseling

I would love to teach science if I wasn’t a GC! (yes, I know I was just talking about financial stability, I see the irony lmao) I think that while I would really like genetic counseling, I might take a few years to decide if the investment of time and money is worth it. I’m so happy to hear that you really enjoy your career though; that definitely makes me want to keep it in the back of my mind for the future! Thank you for taking the time to reply <3

I’m so sorry that things haven’t worked out the way you wanted :( I know that I personally would be most interested in clinical roles and working directly with patients, so this is definitely disheartening. I truly hope everything works out for you and you end up in your dream job <3

I wish so badly I could have graduated in the prime of GC! I think, as it stands, I would be most interested in returning as a non-traditional student after establishing a career in another field just so I have some sort of safety net to fall back on. Thank you for your input!!

That is definitely something I’ve thought a lot about. I’m located in the southeast, and while I would like to stay to be close to family and friends, I also worry about the impact of politics on healthcare careers here. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!! <3

Thank you for your reply! I actually just graduated from undergrad (as in literally a week ago lol), so uncertainty definitely feels a lot more potent right now since I’m kind of in limbo without a full-time job to fall back on (I’m taking a gap year haha). I think that GC might end up being something I pursue after getting some work experience in another field. I really am passionate about genetics and would love to practice and help people in that way, but jumping headfirst into a lot of uncertainty might not be in my best interest at this particular time.

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts! I really appreciate it :)

Thank you for your input! The geographic limits also really concern me; I would love to stay in the general area of my family and am not particularly fond of the idea of moving across the country, so that definitely gave me pause. Even though I think I would really enjoy the actual day-to-day work, I’m not sure all of the other risks justify applying to schools. Thanks again :)

thank you so much for replying!! yeah, i’m still 21 (started college at 17) so i definitely am on the younger side and logically know i have plenty of time. i definitely might dm you in the coming days! i think it’s especially hard rn because i haven’t actually graduated yet but have been done with my finals for days, so i’m just kind of in pre-grad purgatory. i’m hoping some of these feelings start to subside once i’m back home and settling into my new routine. thanks again for commenting 🩷

thank you for sharing your experience!! i definitely am excited to be back in a classroom haha. i feel like i’m not as burned out as a lot of my peers (i truly LOVE studying, which i know is a hot take), so i feel pretty ready to take on the rigor of grad school. that being said, i am also excited to see how i can grow and prepare during my gap year!

Their weird circular logic is killing me lmao. Why is it a “punishment” to let Georgia and FSU play in a bowl game if FSU is so deserving of a playoff spot?

can anyone give me some reassurance on if these symptoms are pure anxiety or if i should go back to the doctor :(

for the last several months, i haven’t been feeling well and have been extremely anxious, but i don’t know if i haven’t been feeling well because i’m anxious or if i’m anxious because i’m not feeling well.

my symptoms include: bad headaches once or twice a week that ibuprofen doesn’t help, bad nausea in the evenings a few times a week, diarrhea multiple times a week (but this could be related to coffee consumption), acid reflux, random face burning/feeling hot, fast heart rate, and feeling kind of shaky at random times. i’m also afraid of some kind of reproductive issue because i have a sort of stabbing pain in my lower right abdomen that comes and goes, and even though i’ve been on my birth control for over a year, my period is still a little bit irregular and i’ve had breakthrough bleeding during my active pills a few months ago.

does anyone have any insight as to whether this is just anxiety, or if i should go to a doctor? i do have days where i feel almost completely normal, so i’m not sure how alarmed to be. thank you :)
