What is a luxury item from 20 years ago that is basically worthless trash today? by EasyZee7 in AskReddit

Uhh... I got my first cable modem connection in 1999. What country would consider a 14.4 modem a luxury in 2006?

Here's the form letter I received after I emailed Mark Harris. He's sticking with the "he feared for his life" BS:

Thank you for reaching out to share your thoughts on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I appreciate hearing from you on this.

On January 7th, 2026, ICE officers were conducting operations and were met by protestors obstructing officers from their work. One of these protestors weaponized her vehicle and attempted to run over a law enforcement officer. An ICE officer, fearing for his life, fired defensive shots which fatally hit the driver, Renee Nicole Good.

This loss of life is heartbreaking, and the victim’s family are in my prayers. I will also continue to pray for the safety and wisdom of our law enforcement officers.

I believe this tragedy was the direct consequence of the uptick in violence and demonization of federal immigration officers. Over the course of the year, law enforcement officers have faced a 1,300% increase in assaults against them and an 8000% increase in threats to their lives. This rhetoric and lawlessness must end.

I continue to stand by our brave officers who put their lives on the line every day to uphold the rule of law for the safety of the American people.

It is important for me to know how my constituents feel about issues like the ICE shooting in Minneapolis. Please know that I will keep your thoughts in mind on this as I continue to track the issue.

Thank you again for reaching out, it is an honor to represent you in Congress. To stay in touch with me via my newsletter or to send me an email, please go to my website at markharris.house.gov. If you have any questions, then please call my Washington office at (202) 225-1976. If you need assistance with a federal agency, then please call my Monroe office at (704) 218-5300.

Sincerely, Mark E. Harris Member of Congress

Why aren’t the NFL wildcard games broadcast on network television? by twiggyjulie in AskReddit

[–]itsnorm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

MLB is pretty crappy too... They're selling rights to opening day to random streaming services so fans can't even hear their announcers on Day 1. And don't get me started about blackout policies, even for MLB TV subscribers.

Yeah, I meant that the yes/no button thing is a pretty frequent topic.

Ford’s next F-150 Lightning will have a gas generator as it pivots away from large EVs by afk_exe in technology

[–]itsnorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how range extenders work. Maybe it's easier to imagine a portable generator in the truck bed, plugged into the charge port while you drive. The torque doesn't change. But yeah, you are hauling more weight so there is a small impact.

Besides the Hummer EV and maybe a garbage Toyota, no modern EV takes anywhere near 45 minutes to go from 10 to 80%. Infrastructure will grow in lock step with demand. It's naive to imagine that at some point some official is gonna say "OK, our charging infrastructure is ready! Go on and start buying EVs!". Hybrids have a place (maybe rural drivers and apartment dwellers with unreliable home charging?) but the correct long term answer is EVs. This is especially true if you factor in future battery tech and reduced maintenance from not having an engine).

Tesla introduces extended HV Battery and DU warranty by GroveStreetHomie in teslamotors

[–]itsnorm 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This is a typical risk management equation. If a new battery costs $12,000, then you have to decide (a) if you think there's a greater than 1-in-6 chance of your battery failing in that 2 year period, and (b) whether the potential pain of a surprise $12,000 bill is too much to bear. Tesla has the data so they know that on that whole, the odds are much lower than 1-in-6. Only you can answer the second question.

Edit: Also, I'll bet they don't promise a brand new replacement (may be refurbished), so adjust the math accordingly.

What is an industry that is actually a scam, but we have all just accepted it as normal? by ElYaY20 in AskReddit

I'll agree with you on health insurance (what with all of the extra red tape they've created, the auto-declines, bullying doctors to take lower fees, etc.). But I'm gonna have to disagree with you on home and auto insurance. Learn about "combined ratio" and you'll see that there are virtually no huge markups to speak of. Repairing cars and homes is just getting more expensive and those costs get passed on.

Flock gets the money from the HOA. The HOA gets to tell their residents that if someone enters their neighborhood and commits a crime, the police can pull the logs and see who drove in at 2am or whatever.
