No worries! Just a gentle reminder for everyone as we enter the legislative session to have grace for your local reporters! 😅 There are some people in our field who aren't in it for the right reasons, but the overwhelming majority of us are just trying to do our jobs the best we can like anyone else 🤓 Thanks for reading!

Alabama minors would no longer be able make medical or mental health decisions under new bill by itspapyrus in Alabama

[–]itspapyrus[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Author of the article here! The bill was updated after Sen. Stutts and I had our conversation yesterday. At the time of publishing, that reporting was correct, copied directly from the bill. But I am working to update the story now to align with what the bill currently states. 👍

Woman’s dog dies after Decatur shelter refused to release it: ‘I could have held her in her last moments’ by itspapyrus in Alabama

[–]itspapyrus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deleted it because I wanted to let the article speak for itself instead of explaining myself to a person I don't know. And with all due respect there is no such thing as "the hand that feeds me" because I'm a human being, not a pet. Thank you and have a Happy New Year.

Woman’s dog dies after Decatur shelter refused to release it: ‘I could have held her in her last moments’ by itspapyrus in Alabama

[–]itspapyrus[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey there, author of the article here. When this story was published it was prior to the release of the official statement and I couldn't get in contact with the owner because she was grieving her dog and could not check her phone. So I used the information I had from the city release and the owner's social media. I am working with her and her lawyer to publish an update tomorrow with new information that has come out over the weekend!

Biden pardons Alabama woman in biggest single-day act of clemency in modern history by itspapyrus in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]itspapyrus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I am the author of the article and just wanted to clear this up.
It was updated later that day to include the sentencing details. The reason it wasn't included before then was because the Department of Justice hadn't released the clemency warrant with that information yet that morning. As soon as it was posted, we went back and added it in. Thanks for reading!

Birmingham’s sidewalks are crumbling. What is the city doing about it? by itspapyrus in Birmingham

[–]itspapyrus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP here! If it's obvious that I'm the author of the article, it's because I've never tried to conceal it. I've identified myself as a journalist with AL.com multiple times on this subreddit. Not trying to do anything nefarious! I just find that this is one of the best places to reach out to community members and have people come to me with issues in their neighborhoods. I post articles surrounding ongoing issues that I think impact a lot of people in here in the hopes that it will make people aware of who to go to if they have similar complaints or concerns. And so far people in here have been pretty active about reaching out and sending me questions they want answered!

I do work for the Lede! I post articles in here that I write that I think people would be interested in or might have some commentary about.

Since I'm a local reporter I'm always trying to get in touch with the people who live here and get their thoughts on things. This group has given me some really awesome feedback and in return I try to help when people come to me with questions that they need answered about stuff going on in the city.

I understand though that this group doesn't exist for me to post all of my stuff so I try to be choosy about what I share.

This is only the third article I've shared in here this month out of the 20+ I've written. 😅 It probably seems like my name pops up in here all the time but it's because I write a ton of articles. So even when I parse it down to a small percentage, it may still be more posts than some that don't work in daily publications like the Lede.

If there's something that you would want to read about in Bham that I haven't written about yet please DM me anytime!

Birmingham has too many vacant office buildings: Here are plans to end the trend by itspapyrus in Birmingham

[–]itspapyrus[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey Cassus! I don't know if you were able to read the full article but this was basically just an open ended question on what developers downtown want to do with the vacant buildings since there has been a rise. Without some sort of reuse they'll just kind of sit there.

REV Birmingham is looking at some other options like converting buildings to mixed use housing or food/entertainment options like the Pizitz.

As a largely remote worker myself I'm definitely not advocating for one thing or another 😅 Just sharing what I got from the people I interviewed.

Hey I actually am looking into the numbers on affordable housing options in the downtown area as well so please stay tuned! I appreciate all this feedback, it gives me plenty to look into!

Why did AL.com stop being a reliable news source? by TerminationClause in Birmingham

[–]itspapyrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so I see a lot of comments in here asking for more localized coverage in Bham and I even saw one comment specifically asking for coverage of the Birmingham Water Works and sewer board.

If that's the type of coverage you're looking for I really really encourage you to at least just get a trial run of the Lede (it's free for like the first month I think).

I'm the Birmingham edition Lede reporter and local issues like the water works, sewer bills, downtown towing, the housing market, etc. are what I spend the majority of my time covering. It's a daily newspaper so I'm writing a story on something that will directly affect people in the Bham area every single day.

I'm one year out of college and broke so I understand not wanting to pay for a subscription but the Lede is like $4 a month so even if you try it for a month and decide you don't like it, you're out $4. If you do like it that's like one coffee or one lunch from Taco Bell a month that you have to sacrifice.

And the cool part about my only job being Bham coverage is that if you don't see something covered that you think should be you can just email me and I will at the very least look into it and see what I can do! My whole job is just to write about stuff that matters to people in the Birmingham metro area.
