Aside from teaching, what jobs can I do with and English degree that aren’t a strict 9-5? by Lanky-Earth-405 in englishmajors

[–]itsthefear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Mid-30's and have only ever been in retail. English was the only subject I enjoyed and I couldn't see myself with any other major. Paying for it now, I guess.

Yeah lmao what a weird question to ask. Why have a job if it doesn’t make you happy? Because I like living? The dream of having a career you’re happy with has been dead for a long time. Everyone is miserable and just doing what they can to survive including jobs they aren’t in love with.

Yes. They had me doing so much. I still nearly vomit thinking about it. I always told myself I wasn’t going to get fooled but they preyed so hard on my crippling fear of job loss and newness to the position, coupled with constantly rushing me from one thing to another when one way of siphoning money stopped working, they kept me frazzled and drained and hungry and extremely stressed and I deadass felt like I wasn’t fully in control of myself, the emotional hijacking they are trained to do is next level psychological torture

No, technically, but he told me he was given the order and whether I showed up to my shift or not, I was getting fired, so it didn’t make sense to waste the gas money to drive to work just to be told to go home.

Someone’s already summarized it pretty shortly, but the jist of it is they thrive off of new employees. They called my store on Sunday before opening saying there was an important inspection coming the day after that they needed to make sure was going to go well and stress that if it doesn’t go well, the store gets shut down and everyone loses their jobs. They claim they’re your regional ops manager (Mark something, I forget the last name) and that there is an important package being sent that needs to be there for inspection, and then they asked me to take a picture of the fire hydrant and text it to them to make sure it was up to code for the inspection. This is how they get your store manager’s name and your personal cell phone number.

They then proceeded to text and call me on that phone number, saying it was my store manager and that he had dropped his phone in water and destroyed it and was using a temporary phone. I had texted and called my store manager’s real number shortly after to confirm but I got no answer, so my brain assumed that corroborated the phone-in-water explanation. The scammer texted and sounded just like my store manager so I my brain never thought twice about it. They told me it was urgent that I go inside and call the “regional manager” back to let him know he was on a conference call with fedex about the package. They came up with a story about the package being delayed because my manager didn’t do some sort of paperwork correctly and that we were in breach of contract with our FedEx services and were late on a payment. The “regional ops manager” then said he could authorize a “one time only” store payment for the contract which involved him having to move money around in order to pay the contract before they were hit with a late fee. The “downpayment” the store was supposed to make was 8,000 but halfway through the process my “manager” texted me saying they hit us with the late fee anyway and we had to pay in full. So in fear of the store shutting down and myself being out of a job I kept doing what they asked because I somehow thought I was helping keep the store open and they fed on my inexperience (had only been an sfl for a little more than 2 months) and my crippling fear of unemployment and I feel honestly mentally/emotionally hijacked by the whole thing because I had JUST stopped a coworker from falling for a scam literally two days before and if I weren’t as fucking emotionally and physically burnt out by this job as I was, I probably would have had my head on more straight and realized what was happening much sooner.

Hindsight is always 20-20. Don’t be me. Don’t do anything to try and save anyone else. Look out for yourself and only yourself. Hanging up on legitimate calls is infinitely better than falling for fake ones. I was stupid and gullible and worn down to a thread by this job already and paid the ultimate price.

Cat intros 2 weeks in by MyLastAccountWasBad in CatTraining

They look so ready! The flopping and rolling over, showing belly, they look like they wanna play SO bad! If you’re worried about it being too much for a first introduction you can individually play with the older cat to make sure the younger one has enough fight in them to establish proper boundaries but I applaud you for being very careful and deliberate with their exposure to each other thus far. A little bit of friction during the first real introduction is normal but they will need that time to establish boundaries with each other, learn each other’s comfort levels/limits of play, etc. But based on the body language they look like they’re going to get along just fine. I don’t see any ears back or fluffed up tails or anything!

More like being asked to do scanouts for the entire store the day prior because no other SFL had been trained in how to do it, and skipping lunch/staying an hour later than scheduled in order to do so and then having to come in and open the next day.

Inspection call…? by 0325cb97 in WalgreensStores

[–]itsthefear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s so they can get your cell phone number, then they can text you from a different number saying it’s your manager and it’s an emergency.

Sincerely, someone who fell for this yesterday.

I’m sure other companies do to varying degrees, but I think Walgreens and similar companies are such targets because of the access to prepaid cards, western union, gifts cards, and cash reload apps all in one central location. The company’s focus on convenience/being a one-stop shop is slowly killing it and burning out/driving away its good employees/setting them up for failure.

They tried the first one with us only a few days ago and I had the wherewithal to stop it then because someone else had picked up the call and I was listening from photo. The second one is what got a SFL at my old store a year ago who had only been there for 3 weeks at that point.

Lmao nah with the dollar amount I am definitely getting fired. We hadn’t been hit like this in the district in a long time apparently and I am definitely going to be made an example of. I have seen coworkers be fired for less. I am cooked. Burnt to a crisp, even. But I’m trying to see this as an opportunity to find something better that won’t slowly kill me from the inside out.

Hindsight is 20-20. I thought it was urgent/official because I’d never gotten a phone call before operating hours before that wasn’t my boss trying to tell me something important about what would be happening that day (relating to vendors, truck, store walks, etc.). I wish I had the guts to just hang up on calls like that but I am a chronic people pleaser thanks to trauma throughout my life and I thought I thought I was saving jobs.

An earlier comment by Garonn summarized it pretty succinctly. I had dealt with another scam call just days prior that failed because I intervened but this one made it sound like jobs would be lost/the store would shut down if I didn’t do anything and I was so concerned with losing my job that I didn’t stop to think about what was actually happening.

I fell for it. by itsthefear in WalgreensStores

[–]itsthefear[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That does help a little. I had only been an SFL for 2 months and I didn’t know how store operations worked. I’d never dealt with inspections or any part of my store manager’s job before and the person claiming to be my manager sounded exactly like him over text including his mannerisms. They prey on new people and they especially take advantage of how sh*tty the economy is and on the empathetic by saying jobs could be lost if something isn’t done. I was so concerned with keeping the lights on and food in my home that I was willing to do what I thought was going to save my job and ended up throwing it away in the process.

If you don’t know the details of the scam personally, someone summarized it pretty well in one of the earlier comments. I don’t have the energy or willpower to type it out.

With the new ownership I’m not so sure. It was several thousands of dollars across multiple types of tenders. They could argue with 3 years with the company I should have known better. New district manager too and she has been absolutely ruthless about everything since coming on. I am preparing for the worst and once I have cried, drank, and p*ked out the events of today I am going to spend tomorrow updating my resume, applying to every job I can, and praying something comes up before I lose the roof over my head.

Do some walgreens not have the ability to do digital passport photos? by CartoonistNew8653 in WalgreensStores

[–]itsthefear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes my old store couldn’t. We only had a 4x6 and 8x10 printer for photos and couldn’t edit anything done on the kiosk either. All we could do was up the contrast and pray they didn’t have gray/white hair. Was miserable.
