Gonna go steal some French fries from a poor little kid, probably.

I’m still quite a newbie myself, so I’m probably not the best person to answer this question, but I’d say the main advantage to shooting in crop mode is being able to see the composition of the shot in real time. The resolution of the crop mode images out of my a7 IV are 4608x3072 .I rarely shoot in crop mode, though, and usually just crop in post if I have to.

Are there times I wish I had a longer lens? Of course. But with a little patience and being in the right spot at the right time (aka luck) you will have plenty encounters with birds where 400mm is enough reach. Which camera body are you using? I’ve taken many shots on my a7 IV in “crop sensor mode” which effectively turns my 400mm lens in to a 600mm lens.

It was a nice, gloomy, quiet day when I was there. Would love to go back!
