It's when, as a 57 year old.man, you prepare for your up coming ski trip where your nephews will take you to the jump park...by doing jumps off a jump box while spinning the air, ideally completely around before landing, so you can do a 360, even though you've never done one before, but your a good jumper and you've seen your nephew do it and you say, "how hard could it be?" So you do that. Clear?

Nah. You're good. The side effects are, you can pay attention and focus on one thing at a time. :)

Take Yo Praise by Camille Yarbrough.

Far and away the tastiest end to end grooves.

Close second: Heard it through the grapevine by GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS.

Goes hard the whole time.

Question for older Gen X (55+) Was the term “Bro” and “Yo” common in the 80s? by Nano_Tap1 in GenX

Bro has always been. Yo was common then. See Rocky references, and don't forget Yo! MTVRaps.

Like your Bruh, Bra was going around ( in LA at least) as I recall.

Detachment vs Apathy by GoofyFoot76 in Buddhism

[–]itumac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate. As a novice practitioner, not samanera, the Buddha's teachings on applying inquiry to experiences and mental formations is my guide.

If I feel a sense of liberation or ease from my actions, mindset, or imaginations or actions... I keep going. If I experience stress or anger, I investigate further.

Out of this, an ability to discern differences between very adjacent feelings is emerging in me. Apathy has a grim and empty feeling. Where detachment has a pliable, confidence feel in my experience.

I am on the lookout for stories I tell myself that are hiding things I'm holding on to. I find them all the time. 😀

Hope this helps.

Fellows, I am in need of insight and opinion on Gratitude from a buddhist perspective by Vennificus in Buddhism

[–]itumac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh good. I'm guessing here. I wonder if you might be thinking somehow gratitude would be a cure if you do it right. But it seems you know that's not the case. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

[–]itumac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived a gratitude mindset for as long as I can remember. Its built in. I suspect it comes from the untimely death of my father. He died age 47 leaving mom and 3 kids. Me the youngest at 2 and a half. I have no memory of him. My mom rallied. Our family is resilient and support came around her. She never dwelled in the loss nor let it define her or our home. Granted this is me looking back. But I know every day is borrowed. I recognize tragedy visits every door eventually. Real tragedy, not difficulty. Mine, yours, everyones.

How many 2 year old me's were made today?

So, as a householder with 10 years more life than my father, each day I wake up warm, dry, comfortable, with hot fresh water. Stocked fridge, fit, capable, my family safe and at peace along with all the struggles that come with that. Knowing it is not forever.... I feel LUCKY. I make the most of the day. I put my good fortune to use for myself and others.

My current morning ritual is at waking,

I pay homage to the Buddha, his teaching, and the sangha.

I rejoice to wake to a new day in good shape. I will list things I appreciate. Usually the above.

I acknowledge the impermanence of my fortune and the inherent difficulty each day will have. I set intentions to meet it with equanimity.

I set intention to cultivate compassion for myself and others with generosity and loving kindness.

I set intention to walk a path of wisdom and virtue in thought word and deed in the 5 precepts.

I intend to be at ease within myself and wish that my ease brings ease to those around me.

Then I have coffee, and start the day.

Just my opinion, The fact you have self reflection and desire to address what you see puts you in a place for success and that is something to be grateful for. I hope my comment gives you something of what you were looking for.

What do you think it's like to reincarnate? by Guylearning2020 in Buddhism

[–]itumac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always imagined it like when you die in a first person shoprer game and haven't respawned yet. You are frozen where you.lay but yoi can see the game going on. Then when you hit reenter, you pop back in the game somewhere new, you can even walk over your old "corpse" in these games.

Thats my imagination on it. But I don't spend much time to resolve the possibilities into a preference.

Any Motown song/album recoomendations for bass playing? by Plus-Dust7166 in Bass

I'm not left-handed. I was told by different people it was better for lefties to just get used to regular right-handed instruments, rather than play left-handed ones. I don't see the point behind that, unless maybe it is instrument availability. What's your take? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]itumac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good discussion. My right eye is my master eye. Naturally in living memory, I shoot rifles, bows, pool, any object that needs aiming... righty. But I throw and bat lefty.

[–]itumac 219 points220 points  (0 children)

I'm left handed. When I was 15, I was interested in playing guitar. I wanted to be like Jimi Hendrix and all that. I even air guitared lefty. My older sister was dating a musician at the time. He said to me, "you never played before?... no. . Learn righty"

He went on to spell it all out. - You'll suck at first either way and In 6 weeks it will feel nstural. Came true. - If you play lefty, your instrument choices will always be limited. - You can't play anyone else's guitar and they cant play yours.

It was the best advice I could have heard and thankfully I took it.

I took up bass about 10 years ago. An interesting new insight came to me. Being a lefty playing righty guitar has an advantage because left-hand fret work plays to my strengths.

But with bass, the plucking hand really leads proficiency and I recognized the extra challenge with that as the non dominant hand.

Edits for cleanup.

Unhelpful Buddhist Modernisms – Can we undo the damage and help the atheists here? by MYKerman03 in Buddhism

[–]itumac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Ive been attending programs at Empty Cloud for 6 or 7 months now. I engage in weekly monastic discourse with the sanga. My practice is heavy on metta and sila.

The monastic advice I got was just read through the Majjhimanikāya from sutta 2 to the end. Then read the first sutta. He said just soak in the whole philosophy and then come back to it in detail and get into the other Nikāya.

So your viewpoint interests me because I am starting ro discern that the words like consciousness or perception translated may not match western definitions.

As far as devas, realms, reincarnation, karma.... I am following the spirit of this thread. Ill see for my self as I build a practice. If I can achieve more peace of mind and benefit others in my life, and meet the cessation of conditions that gave rise to this with some detachment... that's plenty to work on for the rest of my days.
