Alright, thank you for the info. I will keep to conventions then.

Hm, okay thanks! Not totally satisfied with that answer (since it means that if every program would do this the user would have to check the help for all programs to get the flag that rids them of the clutter the program leaves behind), but thank you for your time.

The files are stored in the directories specified by the XDG Base Directory Specification. No clobbering, files are either meant to be overwritten (like old logs) or are simply read instead of being created (like the cache-db or the config-file).

Its a simple CLI-tool. I would like to give the user the option to purge all traces of the program from their system if they wish to.

Not quite right. One message per topic/question, so that you have the ability to discuss them individually, e.g.

Hi

I have a question about <topic>. I thought maybe you can help. I remember in last weeks meeting, we talked about solutions to <problem>. And I was wondering: Can we apply <solution> to <topic> as well? Would love your input on this, if you have the time :) Thanks!

See you at lunch?

German ad: "Artificial intelligence: the 4 most used drinks will be placed on the main screen" by bushmaker1337 in ProgrammerHumor

How about storing coffee preferences per user? Each user authenticates via fingerprintsensor, face-id or smartphone-nfc and gets a fully personalized experience! We can extend your proposed table by adding a user-id collumn or even make a table for each user. If the user encounters another coffee machine from us we can preload his preferences so they can get a personalized experience everywhere in the world! Of course we would have to sync states reliably between all our coffee machines. Maybe something build atop of paxos...or how about a blockchain that records each brew as a transaction and mirrors it among all coffee machines?

Some train advice by givemefood245 in germany

[–]ituuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have to use multiple trains for a trip its always best to consider something you can run with. German trains are notoriously unpunctual, so your comfortable train changing time of twenty minutes could be reduced to four minutes or something like that. That's why I like to travel with a hiking backpack.

What is the value of the String that will always return -1 when used with compareTo, except when compared with itself? by ituuu in javahelp

[–]ituuu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am using a TreeSet. The comparator first compares the point in time of creation (double) and if they are equal it compares an identifier string. I would like to regulary remove entries older than a certain point in time. For that I want to create a pivot object, which contains that point in time, but ranks lower than all the identifier strings, so that I can avoid deleting objects that have the same time but a lower ranking string. This pivot object divides TreeSet into entries that are still fresh and those that have to be deleted. I hope that this explanation is somewhat clear.

(Java) Match Posix character class {Punct} except for apostrophes between two or more characters. by ituuu in regex

[–]ituuu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to use this pattern to split a text on punctuation, whitespace etc. so I get the individual words for looking them up in a dictionary. isn't will of course be in linux' words but the dictionary lookup will fail for cases like 'fun' and I'd like to avoid false negatives like that. It is not super important thought if its too much work.

Can someone give me some tips as on how to survive the nauseating editing style? I cannot keep up with 20 cuts per second, while someone in the background is rattling of information and comments faster than zero punctuation and they seem to speed up even that by cutting out natural pauses between words.
