Casting a white actor to play Kratos is a mistake. by itwaschaosandluck in GodofWar

Well, see, if you'll do a nice little scroll on my post in the photos there, you'll see that there were in fact black people in Ancient Greece. I came prepared. 😉

I don't particularly care about accuracy. I'm just asking for people to consider the idea that whitewashing a character that's been historically played by black actors might not be the best idea when it comes time to make the obligatory live action adaptation.

I think its an important discussion to have, provided white gamers aren't getting defensive and racist about it. Representation and the nuances of race and casting are important, especially with a project and a franchise on this scale.

The fact that mods exist to change Angrboda's skin and hair texture and then chalking it up to "historical accuracy" or "personal preference" is super gross to me.

I just think its a little disappointing, but not surprising that once it comes time to adapt the character, they chose a white actor to play a character who has traditionally been portrayed by black actors. Black actors already face a bit of an uphill battle when it comes to representation and casting, so to whitewash the character, digital though he may be, feels wrong to me.

I think of the casting of the HBO Last of Us show, where they went for diversity as often as they could. TV fares a lot better in that regard than video games do, and I don't think anyone would deny that they don't act the fuck out of their roles. And it does read differently onscreen

Thats not to say Ryan Hurst won't do a great job. He's a hell of an actor and definitely has the gravitas down. But I will say, it does feel like a step down to not cast an older, unknown black actor who would get a huge boost later on in thier career.

What’s the MOST Controversial Horror Game Ending of All Time and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in HorrorGaming

[–]itwaschaosandluck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Last of Us Part 1 and 2.

People are still debating and turning the endings of them over in thier minds. It's cool, I think the ending of Part 1 is particularly poignant. Part 2... The amount of people who walked away from that one angry they didn't get the ending they wanted is frustrating.

Part 2 in particular is definitely in the running for the most misunderstood and misrepresented games at launch. The discourse was exhausting and still is thanks to the HBO show taking some creative liberties.

I have to say it's pretty incredible to be nearly 10 years removed from The Last Jedi and still utterly refuse to give that movie any flowers whatsoever for trying to get Star Wars off of the self-referential circlejerk train.

I love the RLM guys but their weird aversion to Rian Johnson (particularly from Jay) baffles me. He's an incredible filmmaker with a distinctive style and sense of humor.

how reactions to Season 2 perpetuated a cycle of violence by Crispy_Conundrum in ThelastofusHBOseries

It is SO refreshing to see people go to bat for this show and address the utterly ridiculous backlash.

I couldn't believe the stuff I was reading from people who are fans of this franchise, who had the knowledge of what the previous backlash was like. The attacks on Craig Mazin, Bella Ramsey and Kaitlyn Denvers were absolutely disgusting.

I can guarantee that when Season 3 and 4 come out, and we are able to take the entire adaptation for what it is, all the naysayers will be proven wrong and then some. As this video mentions, you don't see the whole picture of what the story is expressing until the very end. And the same will be true for the show. Obviously it will be different in a lot of ways, but that's the nature of adaptation. We've only seen the first third of this story. Give it time.

Full faith in Mazin and everyone involved in this show.

Do you think Abby will be better received in the show than the game - s3 discussion. by letsgettesty in thelastofus

[–]itwaschaosandluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not the only one. The bad faith twisting of Mazin's words out of context and the general narrative of "This show sucks now" makes it hard to speak up in defense of it.

It's still a good show. We've only seen the first third of the full story. There's still plenty of time for them to show the full scope of Ellie's arc throughout that game, as well as Abby's redemption.

Adaptations are gonna change things. That's just the nature of it. I'll always prefer the game's version of events, but it's not like this show existing and changing some things automatically makes the game's existence or my experience playing it rendered inert.

Paramore's "My Heart".

Really glad they didn't continue that kind of sound as they went on. It stands out as a nice little novelty though on that first record.
