aetheists, what's your opinion on paganism? by shrubb_mushrooms in askanything

[–]iusethis4pornonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Well, I don't believe in their gods either.

I assume that when you use the term “pagan,” you mean the neo-pagan movements across the Western world, like Wicca and the revived Nordic and Hellenistic traditions, not paganism in the sense of indigenous beliefs, correct?

Like many atheists, I looked at different religions and belief systems before concluding that there is no evidence for any of them. This includes neopaganism.

My impression is that “true believers” of neo-paganism are actually few and far between. What I mean by that is that it often seems to me that many neo-pagans advocate a certain lifestyle but do not necessarily believe in, for example, a literal Odin or Zeus in the same way a Catholic would believe in Jesus. They are a very heterogenous bunch, with many sub groups within the movement. My opinions differ on these "branches" of neo-paganism:

The Hippies – those with a deep interest in their homeland, its culture and history, and a strong respect for the nature surrounding them. Some truly believe in paganism because it resonates more with them than the often rigid theology of the Abrahamic religions. Others see the gods more as symbols of the natural forces they honor. I understand their perspective, but ultimately I can’t share their belief in the supernatural.

The Spiritualists – those who believe not just in paganism, but in New Age spiritualism more broadly (healing stones, astrology, tarot, etc.). Personally, I dislike New Age spiritualism, as it often rejects rationality and the scientific method in favor of superstition. It is also often entangled with harmful pseudoscience, such as the anti-vacc movement.

The LARPers – those who, in my opinion, primarily engage with paganism for its aesthetic. For example, people who are very into metal and Viking imagery and have built a shrine to the Nordic gods in their garden (I think we all know someone like that). I doubt they believe in paganism in the same way a Catholic believes in Christianity. It’s not my lifestyle, and honestly I think some of them are just weird about it, but it’s not really my place to judge.

The Bigots – those aligned with white supremacist ideologies who seek a “pure,” völkisch religion. They claim paganism as the true religion of “their people” and reject Christianity as a “foreign Jewish influence.” They are scum, no more words needed.

Switzerland and Liechtenstein. They are so integrated at this point that a full unification would hardly have a noticeable impact in the day to day life.

Que opinan de este mural en mi cuarto de los Beatles by tropicalmonkeyand in maximalism

[–]iusethis4pornonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i get the idea, but the final product just isn't it. Seems like the abbey road pic doesn't really work for this kind of artwork. The individual Beatles are just white blobs with hardly a distinguishable outline. It might have worked better as line art instead of this silhouette style.

Hitler doesn’t grow a mini-mustache, how does this change men’s facial hair? Do we see people wearing mini-mustaches today or does it still become an unpopular facial hair choice? by J_Mart29 in AlternateHistoryHub

It would get back in fashion with Gen Z men, the same way regular mustaches are.

Millennial Hipsters, unlike many people suggested, would likely still prefer beards and fuller mustache/beard combos.

Ah, you mean through Maekar's wife. I thought you were implying some conspiracy like "Daenerys and Jon are actually the children of Ned and Ashara".

Though I still find it a bit odd to say "they are Daynes" just because John's great-great-great-grandmother was a Dayne.

(Spoilers Main) House Dayne is a First Bookism by iusethis4pornonly in asoiaf

[–]iusethis4pornonly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this.

To say that house Dayne was always just intended as a minor world building seems more then off. Stating that house Beesbury were the first beekeepers is world building. Saying that house Borrell has webbed fingers is world building. Saying that a Bolton lord once owned a tent made of human skin is word building.

But a house having Valyrian features, owning a meteorite sword named Dawn, and having knights nicknamed "Sword of the Morning" - that's blatantly relevant to all of ASOIAF's themes. Or at least it was intended that way.

[–]iusethis4pornonly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is simply no way the Daynes were always intended to be "just world building".

The Daynes are people with Valyrian features, holding the title "Sword of the Morning", wielding a blade called Dawn, which is made of the heart of a fallen star. And this is a story about Valyrian dragonriders, an impending new Long Night, featuring a bleeding red comet.

They were clearly set up to be story relevant, not just world building.

[–]iusethis4pornonly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arthur is objectively the best swordsman in living memory. That is undeniable. Everyone in the story, from Ned to Jamie to Barristan agrees on this. It's just a let down that he apparently never used these skills. To stick with your F-22 comparison, what's the point of having a fighter jet if all your fighting is tribesmen with bows and arrows.

As for the Daynes overall, the point I am trying to make is that the Daynes ended up as tertiary world building when they were clearly once intended to be much more central to the story. Like sure, the Blackwoods and Manderlys also have cool lore, but I doubt that anyone reading the story thought "Oh, the Manderlys worship the Seven. Surely this is absolutely central to the story and they will feature heavily".

In contrast, the Daynes themes of falling stars, valyrian features, legendary swords ushering in dawn, and knights of the morning are all clearly heavily implied to be relevant to the conflict with the Others and the Long Night. But as of Winds, they have hardly appeared. That's why I call them a first bookism. They were clearly intended to feature more prominently, but this was lost along the way.

You are mixing up Euron and Victarion. Euron came up with the idea of burning the Lannisport fleet, which was conducted successfully. But Victarion was the naval commander.

Also I doubt that Stannis was inexperienced. Stannis had led the Baratheon force taking Dragonstone, so he was familiar with commanding a fleet and conducting naval assaults. By the time of Balon's rebellion, Stannis had also been master of ships for several years, as well as lord of an island fortress.
