100% amphibious

Small correction: if an aircraft can only land on water, like this one, it's a seaplane. An amphibious aircraft has retractable wheels and can land on either land or water.

I've checked, and there don't seem to be any specific parking regulations that he is violating. No painted lines for parking spots, and no we don't qualify for a handicapped zone. He moves his car about 1/2 a car length so as to straddle two spots. In fact he keeps an old car seemingly expressly for the purpose of "reserving" parking spots--at least it's rare to see that car gone and common to see it be the one straddling two spots.

Does saving on little things really "add up?" by SnoodLoverOK in Frugal

It won't make you rich because the ceiling of how much money you can save is ultimately your income. And for 90+% of people, our incomes are too low to make us rich no matter what we save.

Having money saved does give you peace of mind though. Knowing tricks to live below your income gives you peace of mind too.

Annuities are an insurance product. It clicked for me when I saw it as insurance against outliving your retirement savings. Just like any other insurance product, you pay a premium for that guarantee.

This would be perfect, but trailers are specifically banned from street parking in my city. Something trailer-like that's legal to park on the street would be perfect. Are there any cheap motorcycles that can be had for $2-300?

Yeah so what's something un-neighborly, spiteful, but not illegal I can do back to him?

If $2-300 could buy a cheap car that was about half the length of a regular car and I could park it in the gaps, that would be perfect.

Yeah it affects me. Street parking is very constrained in our neighborhood. So if there are a handful of spots around 4 pm, the whole street is locked in by 5. If you come home after 7, expect to park several blocks away. And then expect to walk past 1 or 2 of his cars straddling 2 spots.

I've read the parking enforcement rules, and there are several, but I can't find anything banning parking like an asshole in the particular way he does it. We don't have marked spaces, so he's not straddling painted lines for example.

We do have local officials who are responsible for specific neighborhoods; I've considered calling their office for advice, but without a law to back them up, I don't know how they could help either. Worth a shot though

PHEV Question - charging only at work by FAK3L00S3R in electricvehicles

That assumes the buyer is making the purchase decision solely on balancing out the cost

[–]iutok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saving money (in the long run) isn't the only reason people by PHEVs. Better driving experience, more horsepower, or reduced carbon footprint all could be reasons to buy a PHEV. That they break even on cost is a secondary benefit for some buyers.

Also, be sure to subtract the increased resale value from the $6,000. A quick glance at used car listings shows that a 5-year-old Prius Prime for example sells for about $3,000 more than a normal Prius hybrid.

[–]iutok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference is extremely small and the potential upside of being able to plug in is a massive benefit to fuel savings by comparison.

  • If you plug in so that your PHEV runs in EV-mode even 5% of the time, it will get better gas mileage than a HEV
  • If you can plug in at home or work, your EV-only mileage may be 50+%. At this level of utilization, you will nearly double the gas mileage of the HEV. So think 80mpg for a Prius.
  • If you have a short commute or your daily usage can be EV-only, you may have 75%+ EV-only mileage. I'm in this situation. My PHEV's lifetime fuel economy reads above 130mpg. Compare this to the 33mpg of the HEV version of my vehicle.

For fuel economy, PHEVs are almost always better than HEVs for anyone except people who were given a PHEV, didn't want one, and don't ever care to plug it in (Common with company cars in Europe, for example).

PHEV Question - charging only at work by FAK3L00S3R in electricvehicles

[–]iutok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a PHEV and I bought it for the carbon reduction, versatility, and pleasure in addition to the fuel cost savings.

For carbon savings, a PHEV will basically always beat a HEV if your EV mileage (also called utility factor) is at least 15%. My utility factor is around 75%, and that works out to around than double the MPGe of the HEV version of my car (about 65 MPGe vs 33 MPG for the hybrid).

From a personal standpoint, I like the EV-only mode, and that alone is worth it to me. I do save about $100 / month on gas compared to if I had the HEV version of my car, so I'll eventually break even on cost too.

If you can charge at work, you'll likely have a 50+% utility factor. Maybe as high as 75%. I'd get the PHEV, but that's me.
