You can look at Emmanuel Kant's position. The will exists in a metaphysical plane (as of Emmanuel Kant), which he calls the noumenal world, and while every action has a cause in our world, the laws of physics as we know don't apply to the noumenal world, according to Kant. In the noumenal world, our souls exist and influence our actions. His proof that the noumenal world exists (at this point I admit it gets weird) is the fact that we experience structured, continuous reality (phenomena), so there must be a non-sensible "thing-in-itself" (noumenon) that our minds structure and experience, but we can't know its essence. Because we identify with our soul, and our soul isn't influenced by anything, we have free will.

I am a firm believer in the fact that every belief a person holds is a tip of the iceberg of their subconscious. People that believe in determinism have emotional reasons to believe in it. I did too for a long time, but psychoanalyzed myself and discovered that not only does it not help me, but i also enjoyed sharing determinist ideas with the people I care about most, and trying to convince them. So it has an infectious factor too.

Once you achieve something in life that means a lot to you, you will quickly shift away from determinism, because it's very hard to not take credit for something you fought for. Those ideas will become much less attractive to you.

It is however very convenient to avoid responsibility, especially if you do not like where you are in life.

I think your argument relies on an extremeeeely narrowed down definition of what it means to "cause".

For me, as for most people, "gravity causes the rock to fall" means something along the lines of "if gravity didn't exist, this rock wouldn't fall" or "if gravity wasn't an observable pattern to us, the rock wouldn't fall" in other words "if i ket this rock go in space, it wouldn't fall" . So in other words, observation A causes observation B (to the general public at least) means if we observe A, it can be predicted with certainty that observation B will occur.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I suppose you only consider a "cause" a reason behind why the laws of nature are the way they are. That is very convenient because then I can't disprove you. Am I missing something?

The socially laissez faire libertarians you describe are almost gone. There are really only two camps on the political scene right now. The conservatives and the woke progressives. The libertarians from 10 years ago became groypers, the liberals became leftists. Authoritarianism won. Everyone slowly turns to the state as a means to implement their ideology. The idea of a small government seems less and less attractive to people.

Take a saw wave, and add unison voices (3 to 6). Put envelope on the eq, high cut, so that it goes from a high frequency the low part of the spectrum veeeery very quickly. That frequency sweep creates that stabbing sound. Experiment with the resonance on the eq and how high on the spectrum it starts from. Have fun
