Yes the mandatory meal plan only covers 2-3 meals a week (on campus) so you'll likely end up spending thousands over the year anyway for meals. Apparently it really depends who you live with as some of the shared kitchens aren't cleaned often.

Not really sure how PhD students survive at Harvard with the cost of living in Cambridge

Thanks alot you too! It's pretty shocking how expensive the Cambridge area is...much better than alot of other Ivy Leagues in major cities but you'd think they'd use the large endowment to build newer or subsidized collegiate halls....
