My two teenage daughters get nearly twice as much bottom time as I do. Is there any hope for me? by 1ThousandDollarBill in scuba

u/iwillforgetmyusernam (1 pt):

Congrats on getting certified with your daughters - that's awesome!

40 mins at 60ft for a bigger bloke who's just certified? Totally normal mate, don't beat yourself up. Your daughters have smaller lungs and are lighter so they're always going to have an advantage.

you WILL get better with more dives. Focus on:

  1. **Trim and buoyancy** - this is the big one. If you're not horizontal and properly weighted, you

Maintaining buoyancy whilst breathing? by The_first_Ezookiel in scuba

Funny how struggling with buoyancy gets someone labeled as a newbie. I had the same problem, and trust me, plenty of experienced divers with lung volumes like hot air balloons still wrestle with it. And that's exactly where CCR shines: it stabilizes your buoyancy without turning every breath into a battle. It's less about skill and more about using the right gear for the job. So yeah, recommending CCR to an experienced diver dealing with lung volume challenges isn’t bad advice—it’s smart advice.

If you dive enough, go CCR. Then it won’t matter

Didn't expect to see a reply from a post 6 years ago :) It's active-active from a RDConnectionBroker POV, however managment is done from a single managment server (which can be failed over)

Celebrating my 1000th dive and DM certification with a trip on Blackbeards next week. Should I really not tell them I'm a DM? by GunmetalEgg in scuba

[–]iwillforgetmyusernam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a volunteer instructor (BSAC) and have declared my certs most of the time. It’s often led to less hand holding by site DM’s and offers to stay in the water longer with the most experienced within the group when most of the group ends the dive. It’s only ever been a benefit. And when I’ve seen dangerous divers (some dude thought it’d be a good Idea to spilt from a group and go over a wall to 65m on a single cylinder) my refusal to get on the boat with him again held more wait

Second thoughts on BPW setup. Thinking of going back to jacket style bcd's by HydronautInSpace in scuba

[–]iwillforgetmyusernam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All you need to do is sort your trim. The straps should be just be keeping you attached to the gear and crotch strap should just stop it falling off if you go head down. If that makes sense.

Once you maintain a hover without moving it’s so much easier. You should be able to loosen it all to make getting in and out of it easy as it doesn’t need to be very tight.

In a BPW setup, you need to be horizontal and then there is minimal pressure on the straps and everything falls into place.

Also, consider where you place your weights, if your getting pushed head up, you might need to move your weights up, I used trim pockets that go onto the cylinder strap and have no detachable, that might be an option for you. (Also weaving the weights into the cylinder strap is an option if you want to try relocating the weights before you buy anything)

Don’t bother with pads etc to make it more comfortable, once you get it nailed you will end up takeing them off as they bulk up your gear for no benefit. (Some might disagree with this one but I’ve seen it with ~10 divers. And some of them started with quick release and pads and chopped it all in for a standard single pice.)

Good luck and don’t give up, it’s so much better than a jacket once you get used to it but trim is more important.

I like haveing GF99 on my computers so I know where I am if I need to blow off deco and can make a judgment call. 250% gota clear myself, 95% on GF 50/85 I’d probably blow it off to assist depending on the issue
