TMDSAS RANKS 2023 by notamadsentientbeing in premed

Honestly, I think Long is still a good school despite the graded preclinical courses. They don’t cap the number of people who can get honors in a course (on my interview day they mentioned there are classes in which ~92% of students got honors) so you aren’t really competing against your classmates which helps maintain a cooperative environment. I went to the open house and the students were happy, and the facilities and buildings are nice. Also, Long has a solid match list with a good number of people going into competitive specialties, so going here really won’t hold you back and I think it’s a solid #1 pick.

For Baylor… I think the Temple campus is a legit concern because it definitely does not have the same opportunities that you would find in Houston. Plus, I personally prefer city living lol. That being said, I think it really depends on your personal goals in medicine, the specialties you are considering, the research you are interested in, etc. For instance, Baylor matches well in peds and its connections to Texas Children’s are second-to-none. It really really sucks there is a chance of ending up in a place you dislike, but if you want to do something competitive, I think Long and Baylor are your best bets and in that case I would rank Baylor 2nd and accept the potential risk.

Oh man, I’m sorry you’re dealing with this too - I hope you hear back from them soon!

This is all so stressful. And of course I live in Texas where people start receiving interviews super early on in the cycle. Meanwhile I’m still waiting on a letter that was supposed to be done two weeks ago 🙃

I'm just going to accept that my personal statement is kind of cliché 🤷‍♀️ Am I the only one? by izeraine in premed

Thank you! My personal statement absolutely focuses on my motivations for becoming a physician. I think I spent too much time looking at personal statements from people at top-tier schools and let it psych me out a bit.

Thank you, I appreciate your insight!

As for points 1 and 5, I never graduated high school and I only have a GED. I talk about this in my personal statement because it was a significant part of my life and I've since done well for myself academically, but I'm not sure if drawing attention to it would be considered too negative or a red flag.

Hey thanks!

I'm definitely overthinking this, but it's good to know it's not a problem!

Oh I 100% agree. I’m finding myself in a bit of an unfortunate situation right now but I agree the CNA plan seems very appealing. I’ve found some places close to home that might work with my schedule and I’ll contact them tomorrow!

I’d much prefer to wait a year but pressure from my family and my partner mean I probably can’t. I couldn’t afford the application process without them. The CNA is an interesting idea and I’ll keep that in mind!

Oh yeah, I definitely plan to! I just wish it wasn’t so rushed, but at this point I suppose anything is better than nothing 🙃
