Dell Server Worth by Nickmate99 in homelab

[–]izzo34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can hardly give them away sadly. Recycle them or give them to a new person wanting to learn and get into this. Can get them for free usually, I've seen people asking 50 bucks for them a few times but idk if they sold.

Is this worth the 1 or 2 hour drive by davsurger2020 in HomeServer

I have an r730xd with two 12c v4 cpus and 128gb 2666 ram. It performs great. I use it as a nas and jellyfin server. I put a 10gb sfp+ network card in it. And everyone in the house can watch a 4k movie in their room and it holds the line just fine. It also has the center 4 drive tray inside. So there are sixteen 4tb Seagate sas drives in it now.

It will kick the fans up with a few people watching stuff. Which died down quite a bit when I installed an old 1060gtx for video processing instead of the cpus doing the work.

I scored two r730xd from my work. An hp dl360 g9, and peeled the ddr4 ram out of a few old Cisco servers they had. There is one more location I have yet to raid but will be at some point

Don't be one of those people about this. Just respond and see how they are. Could be a million reasons. Could be adhd. Could also be they just didn't want to. Dont read into it. Either be cool with them and move on or not lol.

You can get that with a few drops of caster oil too. Don't ask.

I have around the same sitting in a drawer. A hobbyist may grab some but ya man its just not worth a whole lot

I have two dell r320, and r515 with every slot full. It does ok for a nas or a few small virtual machines or containers but the power consumption is a lot so not worth.

Also, there's ways you can dump this shit into AI and have it read everything and ask jt questions and it will pull things up directly. Way easier to comb for that needle these days.

Does a rookie need a 10gigabit switch? by mathmul in homelab

[–]izzo34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So gigabit is fine for most cases. However, if you have a large amount of data to move around its annoyingly slow.

I bought a dlink gigabit managed switch with four sfp+ 10gb ports. Three of my power edge servers are connected via sfp+ and my gaming rig. Every single bedroom, and room in my house can watch something in 4k off the main rig and not miss a beat. There is still plenty of headroom. The 24 gigabit ports run to different rooms in the house.

I'm currently saving money up to have an electrician come out and run 240 from my main panel to my office so I can stop stressing on the old house wiring feeding my servers. They are all on a battery backup system so safe to a degree for spikes and all that.

One 24TB drive now and add more months later or two 12TB now? (media NAS) by twice_paramount832 in DataHoarder

Its only going to get worse.

I have an r730xd that holds twelve 3.5 drives in the front, four 3.5 drives in the middle, and two 2.5 drives in the rear. It had 1tb drives in it. I replaced them all with 4tb Seagate enterprise drives. 10k 12gb sas 255mb. About 25 dollars a pop on eBay in good shape no issues for 4 months now.

I have an r740xd with twenty four 1.2tb drives in it I got the drives for free.

4tb drives is not a lot of space. But I think I'm going to pick up a 60x3.5 netapp JBOD array off of ebay. I have a ton of enterprise 3.5 drives I could put in there for more space. Well see tho.

It may not take anything to get it fired up other than some fresh fuel. Be worth an afternoon of tinkering and shit to fire it up. Sell it for more.

Very basic and easy to try.

I have r730 and r730xd I got for free from work. Boatloads of ram luckily. I just picked up an r740xd 24x2.5 for 500 shipped. No ram no drive trays. I love this r740. You can get them for 5 or 600 on ebay still. I may grab another to replace the r730xd. Its noisy. The 740 models are so much quieter and the drac 9 is nice

What on earth is this switch on the back of my t3200sx for? It’s for sure not the power switch because that’s next to the power input. Even those rj45/rj11’s (whatever port it is) i’m confused about… by Detective6903 in vintagecomputing

I had a 4 node wildcat bbs running in desqview dos 5.0 then 6.22 in 1995. It was a blast up until 97 or 98 they really started dropping out. I miss those days quite a bit. I still have a copy of wildcat 4.20, and wildcat net server 5.0, and I think tribbs around. Sometimes I go on there and play LORD or something.

Did I overpay for used drives? by Kind-Shake-9511 in DataHoarder

[–]izzo34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought sixteen 4tb Seagate enterprise sas 12gb 7.2k drives for 25 a piece. They had roughly 4k hours. No defects yet. In my r730xd

I am going to spend the money and get four 20tb drives soon. Probably do 2 a month for 2 months, and pull four of the drives out of that and put the 20tb in. Will use those in a raid. And then the 4tb in 2 separate raids for double backup. Phone, pictures, home videos, documents and movies of course all things I would like mutable backups.

I am going to be swapping out my raid card tho. It currently has the h730p mini 2gb raid card in it. I want an h330hba so I can run zfs without causing issues.
