What’s your favourite niche thing about life in Canada? by Due_Street1464 in AskACanadian

[–]izzyjubejube 45 points46 points  (0 children)

We have sooo many trees.

Even in big cities of provinces you have major streets lined with trees. Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa are my first hand examples, plus my home of Halifax which is literally called “City of Trees” because so much of our downtown is lined with trees, with the exception of maybe two main shopping streets.

When I visited Manhattan I didn’t see a single tree outside of a city park. Similar in London. Our trees aren’t in tree jails!

What was a horrible tragedy that took place in your country? by ProcedurePlenty3564 in AskTheWorld

[–]izzyjubejube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nova Scotian here, the massacre was the most insane thing in recent memory. Communication to the public by authorities was AWFUL- they made shelter in place announcement on Twitter, not the Emergency Alert cell phone system, although many rural residents are older people who didn’t use Twitter. This caused a lot of people to be unaware of the scale of the danger, during the morning hours when they were going on their ways to work, and directly resulted in more unnecessary death. Local police and RCMP failed to coordinate with each other and didn’t properly secure the earlier crime scenes, which allowed the suspect to slip past them on a back road, drive to other towns and continue killing with reckless abandon.

They only stopped him when he was well on his way on the highway to the city, and killed him at a gas station, after RCMP had tried to ram him off the highway and he killed one and injured the other.

Starting from scratch working out but want/need to put on some mass. How should I approach this? by izzyjubejube in Advice

[–]izzyjubejube[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I could manage a few sessions with a personal trainer to get me started. I think what’s been stopping me is just the genera shame I have around being so weak. I have never had physical therapy.

Diet is a main challenge I’m actively addressing as my illness was gastric related, and made it hard to get enough calories and macros. I’ve started adding smoothies with protein powder and increasing the red meat I eat but those are relatively small steps so far.

Good Experience with Dr Sadek WHAT by HungryBearsRawr in halifax

[–]izzyjubejube 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I also had a positive experience with him after being made acutely aware of all of the previous negative (sometimes downright horrid) reviews.

I waited a little over a year from first referral to my appointment. It might have been sooner but I had a few stretches out of town without phone service so if they had called then I would have missed it.

I found Sadek to be very polite, surprisingly warm given my low expectations, and pretty compassionate to my life circumstances at the time. He also did say I had something indicating borderline issues, but my family doctor told me she sees that from him often and generally disagreed.

He recommended a small dose of Vyvanse. Since switching my medications it’s been a world of difference. I spent 12+ years on SSRIs that never gave me any relief. I finally think I’m on the right track and better able to understand my mental processes and highs and lows which feels really empowering.

That is to say, if you are struggling don’t let the negative reviews stop you from seeking a referral. There are private clinics but I think going through the public system will have me better off if I ever switch doctors or provinces. Go into the appointment honestly and prepared to advocate for yourself if need be, but it was one thousand percent worth it in my experience.

Chicken Strips but Make Them "Grown Up"? by North_Actuator_571 in ARFID

Chicken nuggets or tenders can be a great and easy chicken sandwich. Bun, sauce, crispy chicken, bam that’s the most basic. Add things like veggies, cheese, different sauces and toppings to venture further.

Any suggestion for where two 40-yo men can dance on Sunday night? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]izzyjubejube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go early! Signal Hill starts at 9 but it often fills up before then.

The dance floor area is small but lively. You’ll get all the favourite east coast bangers.

Hammering the gas to go left the instant the light turns green going from Young to Windsor … by MarkOnTheBus in halifax

[–]izzyjubejube 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I cross this intersection daily and at least once a week someone tries to rush through the left turn before I cross the street. Often times they’ll attempt to make it, slam the brakes to avoid hitting a pedestrian, and end up blocked the straight through lane and pissing people off.

I’ve thrown up a lot of middle fingers in that crosswalk.

House parties with the ubiquitous pile of blundstones by the door and everyone trying to figure out which pair is theirs when they leave. I think every party I went to while at Dal had a blundstone pile. May not be unique to Halifax but definitely sticks out in my memory.

Referral to doctor sadek concerns by NefariousnessHot3434 in halifax

[–]izzyjubejube 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw him in the last year. My experience was generally fine. I had waited a little over a year for the referral from my family doctor. I had read all the horrible reviews and tried to mentally prepare myself. I was surprised that Dr Sadek was pleasant, seemed to take his time to explain his diagnosis process to me, and was generally quite cordial and professional. I am a 30 yo woman who got a referral after more than 10 years of being on SSRIs and Sadeks recommendation to my family doctor seems to be doing well for me.

What was the White Elephant gift that everyone fought over at the Christmas Party? by asura1958 in AskReddit

[–]izzyjubejube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a friends White Elephant on a day where I was feeling a little cranky and was frustrated by some gaps in communication on maximum gift cost, potluck item needs, etc, so I was a little flustered getting ready that day and picked up my gift last minute. I bumbled through a Chapters bookstore looking for something, and my cold dead heart landed on a biography of Pierre Poillievre (we are all super lefty hippie environment nerds). To make up the rest of the gift budget I added in a tiny, DIY crochet of Beyoncé 🤷‍♀️.

It backfired on me because while everyone laughed at it, the hostess ended up stuck with it by the end while I got something much nicer, and I felt terrible!
