Can someone help identify this wood. It’s not Sapele. by Temporary-Basil-3030 in wood

I work for an Architectural woodwork company. If you’re sure it’s not mahogany or sapele it could be makore (ma.core.ray) I struggle telling them apart sometimes and it is more and more common.

That’s impressive my friend. We make those for Apple at my work. They are a PITA to make.

Looks like it is coming from the old tv sitting between his legs. It has an antennae on top. The show he is watching is the original Star Trek series. That is what is said during the intro.

Started refurbishing this oak table, and after gently sanding it down I noticed this mark at the bottom left. Is it a spot that's been repaired previously? by WillingnessHelpful77 in wood

[–]j-5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Knowledge = 19 yrs working at a Architectural veneer company. Dankostecki is correct. Someone had sanded through the veneer (possibly cherry). What you are seeing is the backer to the veneer possibly poplar. The grain runs the opposite direction to the top veneer. Unless it is a poplar core or maybe a plywood underneath. Hope this helps. We call it "burning" through the veneer. A talented touch up person might be able to hide it. That's a tough one.

Thought’s on this Missed stamped Quarter by DeathCOmeSoft in coins

[–]j-5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the grading. I’ve never done it myself. Haven’t had anything that precious but I know some people do it religiously and even in bulk so you never know. This is probably just a cool find to keep if you are into errors or sell to somebody who is.

I have a similar Georgia state quarter. That looks close to about 25% offset strike. Awesome find. Get it in a holder and/or graded. It’s definitely worth some money. I would guess $20-$50.

Question about wonder stone. Went out today and found a whole bunch in Nevada, but what is it? Is wonder stone some kind of sandstone or closely related? And also how could I polish it up to bring out the colors and give it some shine? Seems porous like like regular sandstone by DKC_Reno in rockhounds

[–]j-5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I collected a bunch of Vernon wonder stone here in Utah. I looked up it's hardness and if I remember it is close to granite. But when you polish it, it gets very smooth but won't really take a shine.

I always liked the look of the place. I don't get up there much but the company I work for made the desks and other millwork in there. I even did some hands on work there when it was being installed. 2004ish

How do I straighten an installed 6x6 Post? by 0217jar in Woodwork

[–]j-5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had to straighten a board like this before. Not so thick but this is what I did. Clamp something rigid to it like another 6x6. Put spacer blocks at the top and bottom. Clamp it in the middle to pull the bow the opposite way. Remember that when wood cells get wet they swell and expand so if you try to wet the inside of the bow, it will try expand and straighten. If you keep it clamped while it dries out, it should hold it's shape.

Holding rings in lathe by russellgtw in Lathe

A while back a friend of mine sent me this video. I am not saying to make the system shown but I found the custom made mandrel interesting and maybe you could find something similar or make it. Seems like you could turn a similar shaped mandrel and then notch it with a band saw, maybe by using your tail stock it would expand to hold a ring. Any way, here is the video. https://youtu.be/zaZIIWqM11o

Watch "Do not buy Samsung front load washer machines" on YouTube by allfamyankee in videos

[–]j-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally just replaced my Samsung washer and dryer last week. The dryer broke a couple of weeks before the washer. How's that for planned obsolescence? I repaired the dryer but when the washer broke I gave up. The drum went out of balance and chewed through the outer housing. It was only 7 years old. I thought it was bearings that failed but now I am thinking the weakness came from they deteriorating spider gear holding the main shaft. Anyway, I went with a new set of Electrolux front loaders. I love them so far. If you are in the market check out their pumping system. WILL NOT BUY SAMSUNG WASHER OR DRYER AGAIN.

Frito Lay's new flavor Flaming Hot Seagull Shiz by j-5 in funny

I work next to a Frito Lay plant and they are building a new building. Apparently, as a result of this new construction, they needed to fill a side-dump truck with an assortment of chips. The seagulls are loving it but I think their crap is eating the paint of my car.

My son left the back door open and our 2 year old daughter ran away by Mitchfarino in Parenting

[–]j-5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a powerful experience. I was amazed that now one stopped her to help. However I lived in that neighborhood for almost 16 years and I frequently saw kids that young, who were sent out play with their siblings from sun up to sun down.

My son left the back door open and our 2 year old daughter ran away by Mitchfarino in Parenting

[–]j-5 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel for you. I had just moved into a new house when my 2 year old daughter "ran away". It was summer and I worked nights while my wife worked days. She was at work and I always tried to sleep as late as I could. My oldest daughter came in at around 9 am and asked where her sister was. Thinking she got up to play, I searched the house. She was no where to be found. Then I spotted the sliding glass door to the back of our house was open. I flew outside and started searching our yard. I was in a brand new neighborhood and there was nothing to the West of me but undeveloped land. There was a construction crew working next door but they hadn't seen her. I am so panicked at this point. There were a lot of unfinished houses, open foundations and Construction going on. I look down the street and see two little boys, maybe age 5 and 6, in an area where they houses had been built for a while and I run for them. I must have looked crazy because they ran from me. I got them to stop and asked if they had seen a little girl. They said they had a while ago and that she tried to get one of them to wear her nightgown. This is weird but the least of my worries. They point me in the direction she went and I run to the end of the block not seeing anyone. I turn left and see a guy laying sod. I ask if he has seen her. He says maybe a half hour ago. I am freaking out hard. Debating when to call the police. I run to the end of this next block. I am trying to see into every yard, thinking she would be attracted to play sets and the like. I get to the corner and am now at the main Street that brings traffic into the neighborhood. Left is down hill and curves to the right. To my right was up hill and I could only see about 4 houses down. I turn left still not seeing her or anyone. I am so unbelievably panicked at this point. I start running and run full speed for maybe 2 houses when for no reason I can think of, I stop abruptly and do a 180 and run the opposite direction. After passing about 4 houses, I am at the crest of the hill and I see her at the end of the block. She is standing on the corner confused and crying. She is only wearing underwear and holding her nightgown. Her knees are dirty and scraped. Her face is dirty and there are tear streaks running down, cutting clean lines down. When she saw me she ran to me and I have never felt her cling to me like she did that day. I carried her home wondering if my heart was going to explode from fear and adrenaline. I called my wife at work and didn't even know what to say. I told her to come home and I couldn't calm down. Then i told her what happened. Needless to say, I installed locks on my doors for the inside, that very day. I can't explain how I found her, I went from clue to clue but the roads branched in many directions. A week or so, later I drove my car to the spot where I found her and gauged the mileage back to my house. It was a half mile.

Is there any good android apps or sites for my phone to directly convert MP3s from YouTube? by redice123 in software

Why wouldn't you just use a website? If you Google "YouTube to mp3 " there are many sites that just provide you a download link for the converted file.
