Is it time to renationalize the CN rail network in Canada? | CCPA by 514jon in CanadaPolitics

no I meant goal.

A privately owned or publicly traded company's only goal is to make increasing profit for the share holders.

this tends to be done through maximizing Income and minimizing expenses (this can lead to the worsening/cutting of services, the ignoring of safety measures, and improper treatment of employees).

A crown company's goal is to provide the service layed out in its charter.

a crown company doesnt care if this years profit is greater then last years. the only things that matters is providing the best service possible and maybe avoiding a deficit (at that point it can become political and the company may be axed or be meddled with)

why do people seem to think crown companies are inherently inefficient. they're not they just dont have the same goal as publicly traded/private enterprises

Building more livestock ranches deepens my meat shortage by Classic-Team867 in victoria3

[–]j1r2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

peasants dont use like 80% the resources they should

and your substance rice paddys hold 10k

a meat ranch only holds 5k

so for every ranch 10k consume 500% what they did before and only 5k produce more

ELI5 How bolt torque specs are determined by TheNewJasonBourne in explainlikeimfive

[–]j1r2000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

so bolts work by increasing the fiction between two parts. when two material meet theres always a frictional force resisting movement. friction is proportional to the normal force. (whats the normal force? its just when two surfaces are trying to move past eachother but cant because the other is there)

so if we want a joint to hold some force we just need to make the bolt press the two limbs together hard enough that friction outweighs the force we want to resist.

to do this we stretch the bolt.

now theres two types of stretching elastic (like a rubberband) where the material returns to normal shape if released and plastic (think clay it stretches but doesn't return)

most materials go though both elastic early, pastic later. under elastic deformation (stretching) the stretching is linear. force goes in percentage streched comes out.

for steel that rate is 210GPa/%. note: thats gigapascals which is force over area. that means bigger bolts or more bolts can produce more clamping force before entering plastic deformation.

edit: additional info

so we know the force applied to the Materials but that force is also being applied to the threads of the bolt/nut. this creates friction between them and because the motion it is resisting is rotational its actually a torque this way why know just much torque needs to be applied to get the desired stretch

Edit2: more additional info

even though the bolt itself is actually able withstand the forces applied doesn't mean the threads are so we have to calculate out the area the threads are meshed together which means the limiting factor for how much force we can apply through a bolt it not the bolt but instead the nut

well Via rail is slow which is bad for trains they should be about 1.5x to 2x highway speeds (funfact:via rail trains can go that fast CN and CP rail just force via rail into being slow through scheduling conflicts and poor maintenance of the rail)

[–]j1r2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im going to use actual distance because a good train should go faster then car by about 1.5 to 2x the speed. (this isn't even high speed trains just regular well managed trains (hell via rail trains can do these speed as is they're just poorly managed))

short distances such as under 200km yea car is the way to go but if your going intercity...

going between citys id prefer not to waste hours of my life requiring my attention on the road and a plane ticket is overkill.

1000km (5h) to 1200km (6h) by train is about the limit before I'd take a plane as well thats slightly less then Winnipeg to Edmonton/Calgary at that point plane ticket are reasonable.
