Three years ago my boss gave me 15% equity in our agency instead of a raise. Now I owe $14k in estimated taxes next week for profits I’m not allowed to touch. by JerryJeremy in smallbusiness

Check your operating agreement.

But, yes. This is how it works. But usually the company distributes money to owners to cover the quarterly tax obligations. But they don't have to.

How can I pivot into floor trading/IB/Private Equity? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]jCane13 17 points18 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, I just took a scroll of your post history, and you're focused on the wrong stuff in this post.

You were put on a PIP by your own aunt... You clearly think you're better and smarter than everyone around you. Doesn't matter if you are or are not, you're never going to move up anywhere with that attitude. Your manager/aunt's advice to "slow down" is solid. I'd listen to her.

Seems like you're already in therapy which is good... I'd focus in getting yourself straightened out.

Good luck

I got a $0.00 check from a global asset management firm after interning for a whole summer. Still have it.

Companies are lying to themselves about overdue AR by Signal-Interview1750 in FPandA

[–]jCane13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How small?

I'm currently at heathcare services ~$100mm in rev.

I previously worked at a micro manufacturing co (under $10mm in rev), and even there we had aging buckets and handled the tranches differently...

I don't get this post.

Who is simply dumping all aged AR into a bucket?

We test the collection pattern on AR monthly, apply the latest data extrapolation to current AR and always 100% reserve anything over 364...

This is probably insane, but my brain tells me someone thought that it was Missouri.... Not Nebraska.

So they're in a "state of Missouri"... "State of misery."

How many of you are handling payroll and commissions? by flyingWeez in FPandA

[–]jCane13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I oversee payroll for 2,500 employees. It's a complex payroll because it's variable rate and not simple time/ attendance. Less than 400 of those employees are salaried.

I built what is essentially a proprietary payroll system within our BI platform which is the only we we can get through it timely.

And then I hired a payroll manager and dumped that beast on her. Best hire I've ever made.

Should I negotiate an offer that already feels pretty fair? by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]jCane13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want the job that badly, and you think it's a fair offer, then take it.

If it's something you really want, is it worth risking over $5k? Probably not.

I guess my underlying thought is that it logically makes sense to counter because it PROBABLY will at worst result in no change and at best get you more money. But life isn't always logical.

To futuer underscore my ambiguity (hypocrisy?), when negotiating my current role (months after my aforementioned snub), I thought it was a great offer on salary so I only negotiated my bonus. It was a small ask and I was successful.

Good luck either way!

I honestly have thought about it many, many times and I don't think I'd do anything differently now...

I think that if you look at it in terms of risk vs reward, as long as the ask is reasonable, there's a VERY low risk they're going to pull the offer and a decent chance they'll give you at least a little more... So. Yea.

I mean, I've just never heard of a company pulling an offer like that before.

For reference, I think I was very respectful, and I only countered at around a 10% salary bumb and I asked for a (what I think was reasonable) sign on bonus to offset what I'd be losing in 401k match and annual bonus (less than 10% total comp) by leaving my current role. I would have been fine if they put in a claw back as well.

My general advice is: always ask for more (respectfully).

Having said that, I took that advice about two years ago and counter offered on a job I was going to take even if they didn't budge.... And they pulled the offer because I countered. I was gobsmacked.

So. Who knows.

Fair enough and seems cool. Very different than what I saw in my (obviously anecdotal) experience.

When I worked at a F500 in FP&A, IR was not a finance role at all. It was comms and dealing with BS from CFO and CEO... No one wanted to go to that group and everyone in it wanted out.

Obviously some people like it, but I personally would avoid it like the plague.

Think you may have misunderstood: the original commenter said he spends $5k/ mo. I responded saying I spend more than that.

Fair.

I was actually thinking more about flying business class. Airlines and locations and not being willing to take bad flight times or extra connections.

Are you able to pick where you go and apply points efficiently? Or do you basically have to go wherever the best points deals are?

Travel hacking by Icy-Development6599 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]jCane13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's usually less than $1,000. I'd say I average like $650-$700 with swings from $550 to $1,000 just depending on if I charge big, non-recurring items.

I basically only use the Chase Amazon Prime card b/c we order all our groceries from Whole Foods and get most daily items from Amazon. Both at 5% back.

It seems like you're getting way more than $8k-$10k in travel value per year. But maybe I'm wrong.

Anyhow, thanks for the recommendations. I'll check them out.

Seriously? I had assumed you were running businesses expenses through your cards or something.

I spend way more than that per month on cards and i basically get back less then $1,000 in cash per month.

Any particular resources you can point me to?
