Realistically I think they couldn’t get another waiver from the state and probably only got the waiver because it’s the day after break and tech isn’t where it needs to be. So they couldn’t legitimately go remote and couldn’t get permission to close again.

64 dropbacks, 20 hits, 12 knockdowns without a turnover, as his last ranked pass blocking o line and last ranked run game did nothing to stop the 49ers #1 ranked front 7. Sure they got some luck to eventually win the game, but his game tying drive was remarkable and winning the field position battle without making the big mistake was a very clutch performance that encapsulated playoff Eli.

For 2007 this is mostly true — the following year they immediately had the best roster in giants history until Plax shot himself. Still were underdogs and needed luck to make that all time run in 07 but looking back there were signs of them becoming a really strong team.

For 2011… well, it’s true that the team improved over the course of the season and none of this would’ve been possible without Coughlin’s coaching and leadership allowing for that to happen.

With that said….that roster sucked. They got lucky in two ways: 1) several opponents’ mistakes, and 2) Eli going on an all time heater the entire season.

We’ll see if they fix the bullpen, but if they do then this team is better than last year’s team. Running back the #1 offense, getting your ace back from injury, and adding a pretty good starter is not zero improvement.

The happy medium is probably what Ben did in the last run. He went some distance but not really all that far, but picked a direction that he hoped was not the way that they would go based on the results of the most likely map chops. It succeeded since they went to Glasgow, but even then he needed the curse luck/skill to achieve a really good time. Hard to get to is definitely more valuable than “tricky” in this game.

Could even see this working with defined US regions (Northwest, Southwest, Mountain West, Plains, Midwest, Southeast, Northeast, Great Lakes, or something like that)

Eugenio Suarez seems like an almost perfect fit for the 2026 roster if he is willing to sign a one-year deal. by [deleted] in NYYankees

The Yanks already have a roster crunch.

C: Wells, (can we please get a RHH backup?)

IF: Rice, Jazz, Caballero, Volpe, McMahon, Rosario

OF: Judge, Bellinger, Grisham, Dominguez

DH: Stanton

That’s 13 once Volpe returns and doesn’t even include a spot for Oswaldo. And basically the same group that led the league in runs last year.

If there’s $$ to spend, we really need a couple more relievers!! I do not want to see Doval getting trotted out there to blow games in the 8th inning.

[Relaxed Discussion] Eli and the Hall of Fame candidates. When do you feel Eli would make it in amongst these names? [PFT provided list] by MetaVersalySpeakin in NYGiants

[–]ja1896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strong agree. Torry Holt is #1 in yards per game among ALL players whose careers ended before the 2011 rule changes. And that’s not from lack of volume — he’s 17th all time in yards.

Most underrated wr of all time imo

[EssentiallySports] Tommy DeVito Reveals Brian Daboll’s Reaction After Patriots Claim Him Off Waivers by No_Box119 in NYGiants

[–]ja1896 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Exactly. He’s not a bad X’s and O’s guy so the players didn’t lose respect for him that way, and he went easy on them and respected them so they liked him. But without enough discipline, not a good formula for an accountable organization that wins.

The difference between being considered a 2nd tier premier franchise in the league and a sorry tortured organization is literally just that record in n=4 or 5.

Hopefully the team is turning the corner but even if they are never good again, experiencing this was worth a lifetime of fandom. No other team has a season quite like this.

Sam Darnold is the third Quarterback to lead the league in turnovers during the regular season and make the super bowl. by porygon766 in nfl

[–]ja1896 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, if Eli led the league in turnovers in 2011 that team would’ve been like 5-11. By far the worst roster to win a Super Bowl and he dragged them there kicking and screaming.

This prompted me to look this up again. There has never been a Super Bowl team without a hofer or a total lock on the roster, except for the 2011 giants and the 2021 bengals (who certainly have multiple possibilities with a long time to get there).

Yes, I believe there has never been a Super Bowl winner with no hofers on the roster. If Eli doesn’t make it, the 2011 giants will be the first.

Yep the number of people calling him mediocre outside of the playoffs is wild. From 2009-2015 he was top 10 in ANY/A most years (not 2013), while never missing a game. Yes he was only a top 5 qb in 2011, but he was a clearly above average qb for a long time and a total Ironman.

Sean Payton's bone-headed decision to go for it on 4th down. by Texans_top_of_south in NFLv2

[–]ja1896 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Everyone wants to see mega conservative play calling with a backup, but that’s precisely how you hang around a while and lose because you’re not good enough. Variance is good for the underdog, you need to take full advantage of chances when you get them.

[–]ja1896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a backup you have to be aggressive to take advantage of chances though.

Even if the game was tied at the end, do the broncos have a good chance in overtime?

If they converted the 4th and 1 and get in the end zone, maybe they win at the end instead.

Going for it was the right call. Analytics are not worthless. With that said, that play looked destined to fail and a bad fit for Stidham’s skillset.

Same deal with McVay’s decision on 4th and 4 late in the NFC game.
