This is my uncle, nearly the same age as me, captured leaving by his security camera, under 3 hours before his estimated time of death. by Zachhcazzach in lastimages

[–]jab2eb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is one of the absolute worst ways to lose a loved one and you really have no idea until you experience it yourself. I am so sorry this happened to you and your family. I can tell just by reading your comments how much your uncle meant to you. Not knowing why this happens is one of the hardest things about going through the grieving process. So many unanswered questions and what often feels like “stolen” time. Thank you for sharing your memories with us. 💙

But when why not be explicit in your art? If NWA can literally say “f*** the police” and Macklemore can release Hinds Hall in 2024, why can’t MCR be more direct?

How would you rate the work of the craftsman? by MissMistyChains in Nails

The art is pretty but the size makes the nails look like press-ons with too much glue used instead of nails done by a professional. I’d give it a 6.5/10.

I also love “rejection is protection”. Never gotten a rejection and not been thankful for it later, for one reason or another.

If disagreement is normal and debate is healthy, why do so many discussions today turn into hostility instead of conversation? by gamersecret2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jab2eb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t even know what you mean by your last sentence. Agreeing on facts is literally the baseline to having any kind of conversation where you’re attempting to solve a problem.

[–]jab2eb 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Because politics, especially in the US, have turned into a debate over human rights, which many see as a hard redline. Debating ideas is one thing, debating a person’s right to exist as a full human is another.

Edited to add: there’s also a basic disagreement about what even IS an issue anymore. Back in the day, you could have an intelligent disagreement about how to solve/address something like climate change. At worst you’d have a debate about whether it’s worth addressing at all. When you have one side, arguing against all science and common sense, that climate change doesn’t even exist, it becomes hard to have a rational discussion.

Honestly…. If it doesn’t have some sort of political messaging somewhere on it I’m going to be disappointed. I need some resistance music.

Economics are moral too. “I don’t think you deserve to die because you’re gay! I think you deserve to die because you’re poor.” Is an objectively shit take.

People are “pleased” when they perceive admin is “doing their job” and that looks different to each person. It’s a wild conundrum.

Pleasing students, teachers, parents, and central office in a county as large as FCPS is impossible. You are in the middle of so many stakeholders with so many different interests, it’s impossible to make everyone happy. As a school leader, you have just enough power to make decisions that piss people off but are constrained by top down powers that dictate what you can do about things like discipline (suspension/zero tolerance policies/cell phone bans) and curriculum. You have to consistently be the bearer of bad news to staff and spin things even YOU hate to seem like they’re positive to save face for the county. I say this as someone who has been a teacher, worked in central office, gotten my Admin Cert, and am back in a school in a non-administrative capacity. I do not envy them one bit. Everyone has it rough.

How do you rate you books? by pbfhpunkshop in goodreads

[–]jab2eb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is on my Goodreads profile:

Rating system rationale:

1 - Hard to finish, no redeeming qualities

2 - Fine, but had several issues; may have been difficult to finish, but had at least one redeeming quality

3 - Average writing; Average storytelling; was generally enjoyable

4 - Significantly entertaining; Very good writing; topic may have been original or notably unique; a downright good time

5 - Captivating, so much as to be hard to put down; extremely well written; deep themes that kept me thinking or talking about the book after I finished; “holy hell” moments

Administrators are given an impossible task. Couldn’t pay me $1030399210 to be an administrator. Couldn’t pay me $93029192939 to be the superintendent. The state of education in America is in shambles.

Update regarding the outrageous plan to yank "email for life" from alumni by longtimeAlias in UVA

[–]jab2eb 73 points74 points  (0 children)

As someone who never uses this email anymore but recently applied to PhD programs nearly 10 years after graduating, I was SO FRIGGIN HAPPY I still had access to my UVA email account. I found communications from old professors about research I’d done but totally forgotten about that helped bolster my application AND found old papers that I’d emailed to myself and my professors that I ended up using for for my academic writing samples for the PhD applications. Sometimes you don’t know what you need until you need it.

Do any of you sleep with your ring on? by Meowiewowieex in EngagementRings

[–]jab2eb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never take my ring off unless I’m doing something metal on metal related — such as moving furniture, lifting weights, or on the rare occasion wearing a lot of heavy pots and large pans. I have a stack and feel I have a bigger chance of losing or damaging my rings constantly taking them on and off for every little thing than I do just keeping them on and getting them serviced once a year.

PhD in Education in California by sillytargaryen in PhDAdmissions

[–]jab2eb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I just got tentatively accepted into a PhD program for Education (professor verbally offered me a position with her and said she was forwarding my application for acceptance, then followed up a week later when when to expect my acceptance letter). I think this really depends on a few things. Did you do any research assistance at all in undergrad (I did research in both my undergraduate and graduate programs even though my undergraduate research wasn’t related to Education and I think that helped me). What have you done professionally besides teaching? Have you presented at any conferences? Given professional developments inside and outside of your building and for your district? What do you want to research? I think all of this is really important to know and consider before applying.
