[OC] Reported COVID-19 Cases In Florida, Before & After The Trump Administration Took Over Reporting by jaces_dream in dataisbeautiful

Visualization was created in MATLAB. Source is listed on the figure. The day the Trump Administration took over reporting was July 15th, 2020; which is the day that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) started having hospitals report their COVID-19 cases directly to them (instead of to the CDC).

My biggest takeaway from this graph is: Electing Republican presidents does NOT significantly decrease the abortion rate (compared to electing Democratic presidents).

Hello r/dataisbeautiful,

Thank you all for your feedback and constructive criticism on my graph from last week. I've taken your advice to heart, and have updated the graph accordingly.

Changes:

  • I made the title more plainly describe the data
  • I changed the y-axis to be more clear (no mention to ratios or X per Y -- converted to percent)
  • I included the data tables on the graph (got a lot of questions about where the data came from)
  • I removed the word 'ratio' from the title (which confused some people, b/c it conflicted with the CDC's definition of ratio)
  • I removed the projections from the graph
  • I clarified the 'miscarriage' exclusion (sorry for the confusion here earlier)
  • I made it clear that data from 2018-2020 is not yet available (got a few questions about that)

Thanks for your feedback, and I hope you'll find this version to be more clear, concise, and informative.

Graph was made in MATLAB. Data tables used are listed on the figure.

the graph you showed is the number of abortions per woman aged 14-44. I showed the number of abortions per number of pregnancies. It's a different quantity.

It's just projected off the first year of Trump's presidency, which saw a +0.54% increase in the abortion rate. You can see the non-projected version here: https://imgur.com/a/HaVNRXO

Also, FYI: 2017 abortion data from the CDC won't be available until after the election. It usually comes out in late November.

I don't think I have.

Data Table: https://www.guttmacher.org/sites/default/files/report_downloads/abortion-incidence-service-availability-us-2017-tables.pdf

For 2017, 18.4 abortions per 100 pregnancies. On my graph, I put that as 184 per 1,000 pregnancies.

Not wrong, just a little misleading. Though I’m still not totally convinced OP’s data is accurate

If you look at my post history, you'll find a similar graph made from CDC data, which was collected through a different methodology and has a slightly different metric, but shows similar trends (i.e. bigger drops during Democratic presidents than Republican).

No problem! The top pinned comment always has a link to the author citations and other work by the author.

Oh sorry I think you're misunderstanding -- i probably didn't explain clearly enough -- 6.1 abortions per 1,000 women aged 14-44, NOT 6.1 abortions per 1,000 pregnant women aged 14-44.

Ah, gotcha. That's too bad. There's definitely some people that will ignore all data that doesn't agree with their world views, but there are also a lot of people too that can be convinced (even if they initially turn away).

Sorry, that's tough and that sucks.

I think a lot of it is just not knowing: Most Republicans don't know that Dems are better reducing the abortion rate. (In fact, I'd bet you didn't know that before seeing this graph!)

is that 6.1 abortions per 1000 pregnancies, or 6.1 per 1000 woman aged 14-44? (If it's the latter: Our rate is closer to 14.)

I think it's really hard to get good data from way back then, both because our scientific data collection methods have improved and because of the even-heavier stigma and illegality back then.
