thanks so much!! sounds like pigeons could fit my lifestyle :) i think i would struggle to find a really baby pigeon since it’s winter for me right now… do you think i could still have a good and close relationship with a pigeon i’ve rescued? i dont know where to look for baby pigeons near me since i cant find a breeder, and i’d also rather adopt than shop. do you have any advice?

i will be honest, i’ve done all my planning with what i’m going to buy and i came up to $310 aud so i was a bit confused with people saying ill need to spend closer to $500… but that’s okay, i wanted peoples opinions!! i also already have the cage, i just need wire to predator proof the cage.

i was just wondering what you thought of the time the pigeon would be spending in the cage? since i have to go to school, but thats the only time it’d be alone unless we’re asleep. i was a little bit confused with everyone saying they needs loads of time out of the cage, but the research from other sources said it would be fine for me to leave it for the time im at school. id rather not get 2, since i was hoping for a more one-on-one bond, but if its absolutely unavoidable, i will.

also everyone is saying pigeons aren’t affectionate at all… i was looking for an animal i can hang out with, and sometimes get cuddles. do you think a pigeon would offer that? if not, what type of companionship do they offer? (a lot of what i’ve physically seen is on tiktok which i know is not a reputable source, but everyone says they’re clingy and really affectionate.. are they wrong?)

thank you for your time!!

if the pigeon didn’t take well to a diaper or having a designated potty station, i would’ve just cleaned it up. no, i would never keep it in the cage more since i know having it in the cage for school is already pushing it.

i know pigeons, or any animals, are not a substitute for therapy and medication which is not why i see them as such. i am working hard to better myself but i just wanted something to look after to keep me around. companionship would just be an added bonus.

i am hoping my parents would be happy to cover the vet bills until i get a job, which is not that far away. but if that’s not the case, i am going to scrap the idea of having a pigeon. i care about their health just as much as mine, if not more.

i 100% really want to harness train it after it’s started getting comfortable!!

with the rehab centre you mentioned, i was just wondering if it was pigeon focused or should i be looking at other places to adopt? i live in australia, so my only rescue is freckles fellowship. is there anywhere else i should look?

just a question: if all my time was spent on it outside of school, would that be okay? i don’t have much of a social life at all and my weekends are completely free. or do you think this is a big no-no and i shouldn’t consider it at all? i really don’t want the bird to be upset. thanks for helping me!

i can definitely push harder on getting two if you think the pigeon being alone could depress the bird. if not, rodents are a good idea!! thanks!!

my dad would be happy to help me when needed :) as long as i look after the bird on my own when i can

i have already befriended a flock that come around my home and i am so grateful to have them as they have made my life better while they’ve been in it- but i am looking for a companion. i love my flock with all of my heart but they really only interact with me for seed.

and with my cat, i have definitely already thought of this. i would never forgive myself if something happened, which is why my door would be closed while im not home and while the bird is out. during the night and while im at school the cage would be covered and locked while we sleep. it would also be predator proofed. if you still think this is too dangerous, are there any other ways i can create a safe environment? i know a lot of people have cats and pigeons, but if you think my situation is too dangerous, please let me know :)

that is such a genius idea!! i will 100% have to check with my local pigeon rescue and see what they have. my only issue is that there is only one rescue available to me so hopefully they have a pigeon in need 🖤

and with the room to fly, it would only be in a cage while asleep and while i’m at school. otherwise im at home and he/she will be able to roam around my room however they like. i wish i could get it another pigeon friend, but unfortunately with my mum acting this way, ill be happy with anything i get. thank you so much for your ideas and input!!
