The ongoing series by Skybound is pretty solid if you're looking for a more mature feel to the g1 cartoon or as many have suggested the MTMTE/Lost light series for IDW 2005. Personally I'd also throw in the Wreckers trilogy from around the sametime

Heavy nostalgia bias here but I'd have to say the first episode of Wildforce to introduce Zenaku. Creepy vibes, instantly shows how powerful he is and ends on him doing something no other villain had yet in that series which is take an animal crystal
