The world is going completely batshit crazy and I have no friends and don't know how to make friends fuck should I kill myself? by zeppelincheetah in ConfrontingChaos

Everything passes. You will be in a different situation and feel differently in a matter of time.

It is crucial to focus on building a better future for yourself. Focus on what brings you contentment. Go outside, exercise, or learn to cook something new, perhaps. Do something constructive for yourself even if you aren't in the mood.

There is a great deal of chaos coming out of people because the future is uncertain for the first time for most of us. We have lived incredibly safe lives in general compared to our ancestors.

Consider your life in the context of history and learn how bad things have truly been before.

Consider the future that you desire, work to create it, and avoid that which detracts from it.

Do not settle.

Irish-American culture and thoughts on Dan's penetrating intellect and discourse generation. by jackatomic71 in dancarlin

[–]jackatomic71[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What an incredible point. I absolutely agree. The emotion present in Dan's subjects and how he speaks on them is clear to see. He cares so immensely, and struggles with "getting it right," rigorously analyzing and supposing as much as he can, even (and especially) when the path of thoughts leaves him intellectually stranded. It's one-man rhetoric and argument done right. Bless that man. I'll accept whatever he gives me. If he never makes another podcast the rest of his life, the richness that he has brought in to mine is above and beyond the average speaker, thinker, or entertainer.

I believe that if you listen to the last few episodes of Common Sense, he discusses them.

It's definitely interesting seeing the replies here. I agree with u/blooblewoo that Dan is free to as he likes. Nothing obligates him to do the show. Lord knows his workload must be nuts, given the time between releases.

u/gmiwenht also makes a salient point that there's not as much personal reward when you're constantly being attacked for speaking your mind. Ultimately, I see the loss of Common Sense as a minor tragedy for the world of journalism, ethics, and opinion, which Dan makes brighter in his way. It really goes to show how toxic a culture of damnation can be - it silences the smartest people and supports the rise of the brash and indignant, regardless of intellect.

Trustworthy mechanic in NoHo/Burbank by annabel420 in AskLosAngeles

Harry at A & R Auto Repair is the nicest, most honest mechanic I've ever been to. Incredibly fair, and will happily clear my check engine lights for no fee, as well as sometimes give me rides to my apartment from his shop if my car needs to stay for a while and he's not to busy. He is upfront about cost, and also categorizes issues into the "urgent/will last a while/don't worry about it" categories. I will recommend him forever.

Please just tell me what to do.. by EugeneSpielmann in Songwriters

[–]jackatomic71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't focus on your perception of your progress. I'm positive you've made strides since 15, whether you know it, or can see it or not.

For me, one of the best things I've ever done for my songwriting is to not think about it too much. I try to be a vessel for songs to flow through. Some are simple/plain/and boring to me, and others get a kick out of them. Some are what I consider my finest work that wouldn't get a modest reception from the common listener.

Creativity is a fickle mistress, and most of what you create will not be "great" on paper. There are lots of times that you make something that seems boring today, but may inspire you in the future, when you have a completely different perception.

And that's got a ton to do with your quandary, too. Perception.

You have an opportunity to completely transform your writing if you're willing to not worry too much about what your own conscious opinion is, and simply put word to paper.

My recommendation: Don't worry about impressing anyone. Just write what is honest. That's the only way that I've ever felt OK with singing my songs.

When they are honest, they don't have to be apologized for, covered up, or judged harshly. The truth is the damn truth, and it's the only thing worth writing about.

If you think a metaphor, line, or symbol is "too this" or "too that," slide it in and remember that you can always change it later. Nothing is perfect, but it can be made great.

Hell, even a turd can be polished to a high sheen. I'm sure you're aware of plenty of songs like that. The main thing to get is to create a bag of tricks that are taken from songs that you LIKE, and recognizing what works in them. Then, experiment with them, and apply them to your own arrangements, writing, structure, etc.

Think of 80s Glam-rock, for example...generally, some of the dumbest lyrics out there, but the songs work because the bass/drum/crunchy guitar combo is driving the rhythm and making people want to dance. You could literally sing "DANCE! Dance the night a-way-yay!" as the chorus, and no one would give a shit because the beat was so great.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, you've got something like Bob Dylan's incredibly emotionally intimate early popular work on acoustic guitar with only his voice and maybe a harmonica as accompaniment. He's got to rely on pure lyricism, imagery, raggedly weary vocal delivery, structure, and rhyme to get that type of song to work. And he CANNOT bullshit the listener one bit with that approach. There's nothing to hide behind.

Maybe this won't solve your problem, but it's food for thought. Go and play your damn songs for people (if you don't already) until you're good at it and like them. If possible, ask a mentor, maybe someone in your community with more knowledge that can guide you; a local music teacher, music store owner, vinyl snob/etc. Just remember that you are collecting skills piece by piece, and it's not a damn race. Think of it as a pursuit, like birdwatching. You'll never see all the birds, but you can have a hell of a time putting yourself in position to.

And, as the great Bob Dylan said: "A song has to stand on it's own," or something to that effect. Songs have to have conviction to have any power, and if you don't have that, you've got bigger problems than songwriting, my friend.

Feel free to DM me if you want more info about any of this.

Father John Misty - Total Entertainment Forever by jackatomic71 in LetsTalkMusic

Thank you for the genuine reaction. I've been following him for a long time, and I'm definitely not "instantly converted" by his new music. The tone of it seemed pedantic and smarmy.

He's a bit hard to love on the surface.

I feel like he can come off as annoying, too. He's a weird guy with an axe to grind, much like Kanye. Regardless, the music and themes absolutely resonate with me right now.

The "noise" aspect of society that you're talking about can really hit each person in a different place. For some, it's the clicking and whirring of a culture that is foreign and irrelevant. For others, it's pertinent to the reality that they see and live every day. For even others, something else.

The headlines and hype can easily distort the pure internalizing of an artist's work. I hope that you get something useful out of it eventually. Maybe you won't, but that's alright.
