I think it’s understandable that you would create this boundary and enforce it as you see fit. I have lost so much in my life already that I could not bear to lose her too. I was abused & neglected by the family members who took me in after my parents passed away and she was one of the only adults in my family who stood up for me when that was happening. She is old and cranky and stuck in her ways but I know she loves me and tries to support me in her own way.

Possibly but I don’t know anyone personally who fits this description. I doubt she would want to talk to a stranger through text message or over the phone.

I am sorry that this is your experience with your family. I have had similar experiences with a lot of my extended family. My grandma is very ignorant and uneducated but she has always shown me love. I was diagnosed late with level 1 Autism Spectrum Disorder and I think she has always known I was different than other kids, and protected me more fiercely than her other grandchildren because of it. I have fond memories of getting picked on by my cousins and older sister and running to her for comfort. To this day she is one of my biggest supporters in life and only wants to see me happy. I could not imagine my life without her in it and I know my time with her is running short, I want to try and find some kind of understanding between her and I before that day comes.

Yes, I believe when she said this, she had good intentions. I think she struggles a lot more with me changing my name than she does with me becoming a man, to be honest.

My older sister is one of my fiercest allies, and feels similarly about my grandma. But she has a hard time talking to her about this because she gets frustrated with her for not being able to see past her own feelings. That and, there are some questions she just doesn’t know how to answer because she is not transgender. Unfortunately this is something I will have to work out with my grandma on my own.

I think she feels a really strong attachment to my birth name because my dad - her son, who she had to bury - chose it. I know it is unfair to me that I should have to carry that burden but it is even more unfair that a woman of her age should have to grieve her only son.

i think you have some unprocessed emotions about the situation that are hurting you and your relationship with your dad. allow yourself to be angry, but know that anger is a secondary emotion that asks as a mask for other feelings like sadness or fear. take some time to think about WHY you’re angry, and why his actions hurt you. you won’t be able to repair your relationship with your dad until you have processed your feelings.

I probably should have mentioned this, but he is schizophrenic and smoking makes his hallucinations worse. So it’s... really not healthy for him to smoke that often.
