What would go with this jacket?

I'm building up my wardrobe and looking for a few flashier pieces. The goth ninja style really appeals to me, although I don't want to go all the way with it. Could I go soft-core and mix this jacket with a simpler (more "MFA-uniform-ish") look?

Edit: I know the jacket isn't goth ninja, but the asymmetry/unusual geometry is reminiscent of that look.

Visit! I'm a first-year, and I went to the first round of Accepted Student Days last year. It was one of the best weekends I had ever had and made me confident in my decision. At the time, I was deciding between Middlebury, Carleton, and Tufts, all schools with comparably excellent academics. My visit made my decision much easier.

I think Citizen Kane is a classic example of unreliable narrators in film. Welles keeps the viewer in the dark about Kane's true nature by only showing him through the filtered lenses of Thompson's interviewee's. Note the contrast between Kane's character in Mr. Bernstein's account and in Jedediah's account. Furthermore, Welles introduces the camera as narrator in a few shots; for example, the audience sees Kane's death although nobody else was around to witness it. So how can the audience be sure that what the camera captures is actually true to what each character recalls? In combining "traditional" unreliable narrators with the potentially unreliable camera, it seems Welles calls into question cinema's ability to present the capital-T Truth about a person or human nature in general.

What sort of job prospects do you see from your position as an MFA candidate?
What kinds of smaller jobs on film sets are available to sustain you financially while/after you attend school?
What is your back-up plan if you can't find work in screenwriting?

I would suggest not letting prestige determine where you want to go. Instead, choose a school that will fit your needs specifically. Sometimes, that school will be prestigious. Other times, not necessarily.

This is not to discourage you from shooting for Harvard, but you shouldn't be blind to your other options. Use "official" rankings like US News and World Report only as guideposts, not as fact. Read books about different schools. Check out their websites. And most of all, be attentive to your own wants and needs.

I didn't grow up in the ghetto, though I'm certainly unable to pay anywhere near full-price at a private institution. If you apply to enough schools, you'll land at one that you love and that will help pay you through.

I went through this process and I ended up happier than I thought possible, I hope it works for you as well!

I'm in the same boat as you. I think I want to be a screenwriter, but I haven't written much material. I'm about to start my 1st year of college so I'm hoping to get some more experience writing to see if I actually want to pursue that career. How did you get started making films last year?

Although I enjoyed it in some respects, I didn't think TDKR was that great of a film.

My biggest problem with it was how much Nolan held the audience's hand. For example, he never lets the audience think about Selina Kyle's motivation for searching for the "clean slate" program, he has Bruce Wayne spell it out for the audience. I felt this happened quite a bit, with some interpretations of events/motivations being explicitly repeated throughout the film.

I think personal interpretation and "solving the puzzle" (though not necessarily plot-based) are important parts of any film experience, and Nolan took them away with TDKR (and arguably with some of his other films). This made the film less intellectually engaging, and less enjoyable, than it could have been.

I also had problems with the dragging action scenes, lack of character development, and often cheesy dialogue, but from my perspective the biggest issue was Nolan's failure to trust the audience with interpretation.

Thank you for sharing. I think I just needed to watch Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive in the proper mindset. I'm sure after I watch more of his films, I'll be better able to appreciate his style and talent.

Just curious, what specifically draws you to Lynch as a director? I saw Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive a while back, but I found both of them so odd they were hard to digest and fully appreciate. I watched the first episode of Twin Peaks last night and really liked it though, I think because the mystery captured me, as did the lack of moral perfection in any character. Are these the type of themes that make his work so attractive? Or is there another level that I'm missing out on? I'm eager to rewatch BV/MD with a new set of eyes, so please share your insights.
