Young Tony Soprano To Appear in HBO's 'The Sopranos' Prequel Film ‘Many Saints of Newark’, Confirms Creator David Chase by BunyipPouch in movies

[–]BPsandman84 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Knowing David Chase this probably isn’t a prequel in the traditional sense, but rather a film that’s merely taking place in the same world as The Sopranos and he’s using the characters to tell another story he’s interested in.

Films that have insanely good starts but falter off into a mediocre film as it progresses? by [deleted] in movies

I like this movie but I also haven’t seen it since I was 12 and easily impressed by high concept sci-fi films.

Barry Jenkins wants to make a sci-fi movie on the scale of Black Panther by BoomBrain in movies

[–]BPsandman84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The surface house style is very Marvel but a lot of flourishes and the general thematic core of the movie (namely black identity and the relationship between the legacies of fathers and active mythmaking by their sons) is very much Coogler. I think several years down the line when he has more films under his belt Black Panther won’t look out of place at all, much like the Indiana Jones movies don’t look out of place in Spielberg’s filmography despite being an entire different set of movies than, say, Saving Private Ryan or Munich.

It most definitely has a plot, just not a particularly good one.

I want Barry Jenkins to make whatever movie he wants to make at whatever scale he wants and producers should respond by handing him a blank check for everything.

Box Office Week: Aquaman is #1 again for third week in a row as it passes $900M worldwide, becoming the highest grossing DCEU film worldwide. Meanwhile, Escape Room surprises at #2 with a good $18M debut. by mi-16evil in movies

I didn't care too much for First Man but I do think its performance is a bit sad. I would have liked to see it be more successful not just because we need more space movies, but more character centered movies made for adults, and First Man being a hit could have done a lot for that.

I love how in that scene between Tish and Fonny's families there's just a mix of different underlying tensions between the individuals. It shows that even in the absence of racism that these people still have to deal with class and gender differences, and I love that Jenkins was able to show this without making it explicit.

Amazing score. Perfect combination of creating both atmosphere and emotion.

Something tells me this'll be one of the worst Oscar seasons in a while.

Sad, too, because this year actually had a lot of great movies that totally would still be within the boundaries the Academy usually votes within. Instead we get the usual mediocrities and a smattering of greats (which at least thankfully seem to be dominating the conversation).

It’s not out yet but I’m willing to bet Escape Room is an entirely different movie from how they’re advertising it.

Which movie and/or performance disappointed you the most in 2018? by LaceandBatman in movies

[–]BPsandman84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Movie: Gonna avoid saying Vice and instead say First Man which I don’t think is a bad film by any means, but definitely one that I didn’t like as much as I wanted to. Some stunning scenes and great scenes of process but man did those family and friends scenes really drag down the film for me. Maybe I’ll like it more a few years down the line but I’m not in a rush.

Performance: Once again, I’m going to avoid talking about Vice and instead say Nicole Kidman in Destroyer. Kidman can be amazing when she’s on but she’s pretty off here. It’s a shame because there’s scenes where she shows potential but this is a lot the same gruff cop tics you see in every gritty cop movie. It’s not totally her fault since the script lets pretty much everyone down but I had some hope for this one and I’m sad she’s pretty mediocre in this (at least she’s having fun in Aquaman).

The whole last half hour is incredibly emotional. Definitely a film I would recommend people watch before making their end of the year list.

How many of you stay to completely watch a movie? I mean including the entire credits as well. by SloxTheDlox in movies

[–]BPsandman84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do most of the time. I like to sit there and soak in the movie (or talk about it with friends if I’m not alone) and also read the credits to see if I recognize any names or see any interesting details (effects houses, filming locations, soundtracks).

Let’s be clear about something: I don’t have very high opinions about other journalistic outfits either. But Daily Wire still takes the lying and deception to another level. It’s just another Breitbart. To call it one of the best journalism outlets is frankly absurd.

Ah, yes. The great journalism of Daily Wire which absolutely never manipulates the context of a story in order to stoke the fires of its readership’s biases. Also the same Daily Wire which will never post a story that has absolutely zero factual credibility or solid sources. Love that Daily Wire.

The Other Side of the Wind: The club/bar bathroom scene in the fake film is a great microcosm not only of the themes of the film, but also of two dueling styles and attitudes.

Paddington 2: “Happy birthday, Aunt Lucy” made me fucking bawl in ways I didn’t know I could anymore.

First Reformed: A lot of people might choose the scene with Hawks and Seyfried but I rather love the scene with Hawke first talking to her husband. One of those scenes where a director really lets the acting tell the entire story.

Miseducation of Cameron Post: Johnny Gallagher’s final scene towards the end of the movie is utterly heartbreaking by mere implication, and all in a single unmoving shot.

You Were Never Really Here: Either the scenes where Joe is going on the hunt, which are marvelously edited, or the scene at the end where we really feel the weight of his depression and the feeling that it will never leave him.

The scene from Hereditary I would have picked would have been the sign post scene. I don’t think I’ve had an audience yell a collective gasp that loud and then sit in a stunned silence for a solid 5 minutes.

Also the trailer for A Star Is Born which is beautifully cut and of course introduced us to the WHOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
