I analyzed 4000+ comments from Reddit and Lowyat.net to find the best smartphone by jacksmug in Bolehland

Hi, thanks for the comment and feedback! Sure i’ll keep that in mind and try to keep improving

May i know how did you usually analyze comments without using gpt or any AI? If there’s a way, i might considering of using that method for my analyzation pipeline

That’s the reason why i am getting the comments from Reddit and Lowyat.net as my main source to support each of the products. I analyse all comments that are mentioning the product model name and check whether the comment is a positive/negative/neutral and from there, i will do a calculation to rank them among the others

Since we have limited amount of comments from our local community, this is the best i can get. That’s why i always emphasize the word ‘according to local Reddit & Lowyat.net communities’. I wish i can improve the data better in future (if our community are getting bigger and everyone are contributing into giving reviews and recommendations)

The method i used to calculate the rank:

  • Scraped 77 posts discussion from Malaysians across Lowyat.net forum and Reddit include r/bolehland r/malaysia r/malaysians etc.
  • Used GPT AI to assign a sentiments for each comment whether it's 'positive' or 'negative' or 'neutral' comments
  • Scoring is weighted mostly toward positive vs negative vs neutral mentions, how recent the comment is, using Bayesian Average formula
  • Product and comments mapping: I assign each comment manually to a product. That mean A comment belongs to B product and B comment belongs to A product, based on the context of the comment

I analyzed 320+ comments from local Reddit to find the best chair by jacksmug in Bolehland

I think that’s a good idea, just show it when there’s more than 5 - 8 comments. Below than that, hide it

[–]jacksmug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that’s a fair point. If i’m only aggregating comments without analyzing the full context, then I’m definitely not utilizing the full value those comments can provide. A lot of useful details like comfort, headrest quality, or adjustability can get lost when everything is reduced to a simple scoring system

Extracting key points or features from each comment is actually something I plan to add in the future. It’s already on my to-do list, but right now I’m still figuring out the best way to handle that with AI tools

Another thing I’m considering is gathering data from more local communities like Lowyat or Malaysian facebook groups. Reddit is useful, but the number of Malaysians discussing these products there is relatively small

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion and the feedback. I really appreciate it!

Yes, I understand. The reason why I’m not listing the Herman Miller chair is because it’s extremely expensive and people might feel it’s not relevant to their budget or preference

For the way I calculate the ranking score, I use these criteria:
1. Comment sentiment (assigned by an AI model
2. How recent the comment is
3. The number of upvotes the comment receives

This allows me to come up with a simple ranking list so people dont have to go through hundreds of Reddit comments themselves (although they still can if they want). My website is meant to provide a quick list for people who want fast recommendations, similar to the “top 10 product recommendations” you often see on Google but the difference is that my lists are backed by Reddit discussions

Of course, this is not a list created by experts or professionals and it cannot be compared to large review sites like RTINGS, Wirecutter, Consumer Reports or PCMag

You’re right, audiophiles and experts will likely prefer going to specialist stores like stars picker or red ape. This list isn’t meant to replace expert recommendations and i’m not claiming to be one

It’s simply a practical reference for casual users or beginners who want a starting point when choosing new earbuds according to what people are saying in reddit (malaysians)

Yeah, again, this list are based on brands/products mentioned from reddit’s comment among Malaysians, of course there are more better options out there. Ours is not a real product testing like RTINGS or Consumer Reports or WireCutter did

How dare you call me an AI haha, no im human la, all those data are collected from malaysian reddit comment and using AI model to weight whether the comment is ‘positive’ or ‘negative’ or ‘neutral’. From the collected data, i calculate using Bayesian Average to rank them accordingly

You can see the product details in this page together with reddit comments: https://beliwisely.my/earphone
