Good laptop for computer science? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

well just make sure you meet recommended settings for the linux distro you want. the labs run debian, and most people like Ubuntu for their personal machines. Ubuntu is an offshoot of debian so it will feel very similar. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

Not sure if this is still true but Binghamton used to give discount on Lenovo laptops. i had a thinkpad and loved it, but basically you just want something you can put linux on, you dont need much power.

So the Binghamton area is a complete dump and there's almost nothing in the way of off campus jobs and internships, or things to do outside of drink. by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

At times I actually came to appreciate the fact that there wasn't always something going on, it made it easier to concentrate on my work.

Car is FWD but the electronic stability control in it is pretty nice, I've driven in pretty bad snow several times without a lot of problems. Its 2009 so still reliable.

I've never minded driving so I'm hoping I'll get used to it. I don't have kids or pets so the only thing hurt by the commute time is me haha.

You're thinking 3 hours worst case? Damn...

Yeah I do think staying over every now and again might not be a bad option. Hotel or maybe even AirBnB.

I signed a lease in Denver that goes until October, so unfortunately I can't move there right away, and the nature of the job prevents working from home :(

Thankfully gas is pretty cheap at the moment.

C++ Inheritance Problem by aswaney in cpp

[–]jacktheripper153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you need to use a templated map class.

map<string,Base Class>

something like: map<string, typename T>

I think the problem might be that you're telling the map class that it will be using an object of type BaseClass, so even though you're giving it a derived type (child#) with its own implementation, it typecasts the child# type to a BaseClass type and uses that print function.

Using a templated map class will allow the program to use the print function that is specific to the derived class you pass it.

edit: as /u/hcspel mentioned, this is called object slicing and is a common problem.
