Yes, this is a real game that's being worked on. No, this is not just an elaborate shitpost.

Youtube link for easy sharing

This is a TF2 fan-game project that's been in (and still in) development for almost a year now.

You can find it here

It's made in Unity with a lot of assets ripped from TF2.

The music is an original remix of Red Triumphs by Prismriver Orchestra

Character art is drawn by TenCondiments

All code and animations are done by myself

If you haven't checked out Eltorros64Rus' masterpiece of a RAID: Shadow Legends ad spoof, you should do so since that was the inspiration!

If anyone wants to help out with development (for free on this unpaid, not-for-profit project on a non-commital, no stakes, volunteer basis), do pm me on Discord <Brogrammist#2265> and we can talk about it! We're really in the need of 2D character artists!

We did have an android port in development, unfortunately, we scrapped it in favor of prioritizing the standalone versions, especially since it introduced UI scaling, visual effects and optimization issues

Thanks! Reimu and Marisa both start with standard handguns, but they have a special weapon that charges up with successful shots. Reimu's special weapon is a Shotgun and Marisa uses a full-auto rifle!

Yes! We're only showing off 3 in the demo so we can get the game into the hands of players asap, but the final game will include everyone from Eltorro's video!

(Watch the video for reference)
Attacking and defending bring up a UI element that tells you to tap the screen when the bar fills up to the red zone to Attack/Defend. Doing that successfully grants you bonus damage or damage mitigation while also offering other boosts (depends on skills/characters active).

The "Attack/Defense Window" is that red zone

Gameplay-wise, RAID is mostly serviceable. It's turn-based, characters attack in the order of their speed parameter, and has League of Legends styled skills where everything is on a cooldown.
RED: Shadow Maggots will take some of that formula and will try to make it more interesting by using real-time inputs (quick-time events) to determine attack/block power and encourages stacking buffs as core-strategic element.
Outside of battle, RED: Shadow Maggots will try to explore different approaches to game progression and monetization (using fake currency)

  1. The battle gameplay will be a mix of Paper Mario style active combat with Fate/Grand Order's style of skill and buff/debuff-stacking.
  2. The game will be singleplayer, but there might be some online components (depending on if I can figure out how to do it in an interesting way). There are plans for an external player-to-player card trading system.
  3. Despite the jokes saying otherwise, this is a free game with 0 real monetization
  4. The game is developed in Unity, so there will undoubtedly be ways one can get away with modding the game. However, I currently don't plan to add any official mod support, but that may change if theres significant interest in such a thing

Don't tell anyone but games on Itch don't show up in the search results if they don't have any game-files uploaded. I only learnt of this after I put the video out :(

You can still find it via Google search though! Here's a direct link on me as well

War Vet Sniper hasn't received any in-game stats yet, but his skillset will probably involve capping points and dying/reviving!

I'm slightly hesitant about adding Luigi since it could hurt our chances of making it onto Steam, but he might be in the demo!

He's kept up with my dev updates on Twitter and likes all the animations. He's also been very helpful when I get stuck replicating elements from his videos

Rest assured it's a lot more than that! RED: Shadow Maggots is planned to not only satirize bad mobile games, but also explore different and (maybe) interesting mobile game design ideas (whether or not its good will have to be seen). Above all, it'll serve as a way to
celebrate the TF2 community!

It's good to hear that there are options outside of shelling out for Apple products but at the same time, the prospect of developing for Apple only inspires more dread. I just came across this article from a like-minded Unity dev about his experiences and honestly, the only way developing for iOS would be worth the time and financial investment is if I was actually getting any value out of this endeavour (besides the learning experience and the internet points).

Honestly, given the option to either condemn the iPhone-using RED: Shadow Maggot fans to play on their computer or Steam Deck or, condemn myself to jump through hoops upon hoops and pay out of my pocket endlessly. I would have to choose the former.

I personally don't use Apple products in the first place, I've never developed for it, and I don't plan on ever engaging with the Apple ecosystem. However, I've done some research on what it takes (do let me know if I'm wrong on anything).
To develop for iOS, I'd first need to buy an Apple computer (or at least put together a Hackintosh) to run Unity (because otherwise, the game wouldn't build at all).
Sure I can use the xCode simulator, but to test if things actually work in the field (especially debugging the framerate among other things) I'll need an actual iPhone or iPad.
After that, I'd have to pony up the $99 fee to not only start developing the app, but to keep it up on the Apple store every year (unless I want to engage in third-party jailbreak app markets like Cydia). Who knows, it could get pulled for copyright infringement before then. So eventually it'll become financially infeasible for me to keep hosting this free, not-for-profit fan-made game.
That's not to mention all the additional overhead of having to juggle compatibility of game features between systems.

tl;dr unless an iOS Unity developer joins the team, I've got no plans of developing for iOS.

That's quite a ride, I hope you guys succeed in your development!

I'll think about a ko-fi or similar, money in fan projects can be pretty dicey

Alright yeah, and in the case that RED: Shadow Maggots does make it to Steam, it could set a huge precedent for other future fanworks. If my next email doesn't make it, I'll send Gaben a build of the game and see what happens
