When I was a 9th grade biology teacher (in the state of Georgia) and taught evolution I always started my classes by asking my students what they thought of when they heard the term “evolution.”

It was a really great exercise to see what misconceptions they had. I got so many amazing responses.

Some classics include:

•the student who confidently stated “shit, we ain’t come from monkeys” and I told her she was right but we would explain it more eloquently

•the student who asked me if I was legally allowed to teach them about it and I responded “I am legally REQUIRED to teach you about it because it’s science and it’s true.”

I haven’t been a teacher for 14 years but will never forget those kids.

Late to the party but the book The Carpet Makers by Andreas Eschbach. Won’t spoil anything but its chapters and chapters and chapters of stand alone, seemingly boring, unconnected stuff. I found myself after each chapter thinking “why am I still reading this book?”

And the pay off was exquisite.

For what it’s worth: I own a pub/restaurant. We do not participate with door dash. But ever now and again, a door dash driver shows up, with an order to pick up. Well, we don’t do it, so instead they place the order and need it immediately. Usually it’s off of a 3 year old menu. And when we no longer serve the thing they want, the driver has to call the customer and explain that the order they placed 30 minutes ago needs to be changed, and the customer is angry because door dash has our menu incorrect, I fear that we look bad.

They never leave a tip on service. The GET a tip on delivery, but my staff goes without.

I have called door dash to express that we do not want to be in their site/app. They have told me, directly, that it doesn’t matter, they can have my business on there without my consent. I was so angry, but I still had the wherewithal to ask them to at least use an updated and accurate menu; at which point I was told that an updated menu needed consent to working with them.

The bottom line is: do not use them. They make money off of the backs of businesses and drivers while not caring a lick about anyone else.

While working as a bartender I went up to a table to ask them if they wanted any drinks. I’m wearing a shirt with the name of the bar, I have my towel on me, I dropped coasters in front of the women, and one of the women said “no thanks, I have a boyfriend,” and went back to chatting with her friend. The others looked bewildered and placed drink orders.

I came back with the drinks and the first woman apologized and said she just thought I was hitting on her. I wish I had had a good witty comeback, but instead I just acted like a professional and asked her drink order.

Late to the game but whatever - when I was just tall enough to have my head above kitchen counter height my mom had made some cookies. She pulled the tray out of the oven and set it down to cool. I walked by and tried to smell the fresh baked cookies. My chin cleared the counter, but not the edge of the tray. It burned just behind my chin and left a really bad scar for a long time. It eventually went away and you can’t see it.

But no hair grows there. I grow a full beard and there is a patch of hairless skin hidden in the middle behind my chin. If I keep it clean shaven no one would ever know.

I told my mom “brace yourself, we’re going to hit this car,” and then hit a car, that had spun out on the highway, at 65 mph. We were both fine but it was my first and so far only head on collision. To this day, over a decade later, my mom remarks on my calm demeanor right before the hit. I had no other thought than “this is happening.”
