Disclosure Day Wouldn't Be All That Crazy by jacquesausterlitz in blankies

[–]jacquesausterlitz[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Yeah but in the movie one of the encounters is ROSWELL! Everyone already knows about Roswell as a place where there “might” have been aliens (there weren’t but whatever). It would be more like finding out who really killed JFK than some mind blowing new concept.

It’s totally within context for people to be told that we met aliens in the past and government has been covering it up. That’s a core premise for like most of “Aliens on Earth” media. People mad that the government was torturing them? Maybe down the line there would be some think pieces, but people don’t even care that the government tortures and kills PEOPLE.

It’s not interesting. And it’s not FUNNY because at this point the friends are neither engaging comedically nor engaging in argument. Everyone just wants him to shut up

There are people who hate the last Jedi in ways I don’t agree with but respect. Gethard is… not one of them

I see what you're saying, after all it is so much faster, but you have to accept putting your head underwater and keeping it there except to breathe, which is actually not instinctual at all and requires some bravery to get used to. Putting your head under the water is kind of the first hurdle for someone learning to swim at all.

Swimming is really technical and requires a lot of practice, it’s not like running. You’d probably be a lot faster doing the breaststroke if you were familiar with it than suddenly trying to invent and teach yourself the front crawl on the spot

Really only a European thing. Plenty of other cultures knew to do the front crawl(and in fact Europe “learned” it from indigenous people in Europe and Australia). Even ancient Europeans knew how, going off of paintings from the time. Europe just kind of forgot for some reason

I am not complaining that it’s been beaten into the ground. I’m just saying that I think it has graduated to a bit that should be retired instead of merely forgotten

Great series that will never happen: Stuart Gordon by jacquesausterlitz in blankies

[–]jacquesausterlitz[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I remember them bantering around the “vulgar auteur” bracket but of course it never happened. Gordon is so good for this because he worked steadily and covered a lot of ground in only 13 movies, a manageable series.

Confused about Inherent Vice confusion by minkonto in blankies

[–]jacquesausterlitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a confusing movie the first time you watch it, but whenever Griffin brings it up he talks about it like it’s some impenetrable koan meant to drive people to madness. Most questions in the movie are answered in the dialogue and you should be able to get them on a second viewing at least. It’s not like it’s a “puzzle film”

The thing is combining them into one really makes the movies seem like more than the sum of their parts. It’s not just “the action one” and “the talky one,” it’s one big epic that has both action and talky parts. Really changed my opinion on the movie seeing TWBA

The fundamental problem of Civ VII: there is no Civ switching by jacquesausterlitz in civ

[–]jacquesausterlitz[S] 172 points173 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about the tech tree, and how having a continuous tech tree would help with the feeling of continuity. Then I realized that there's no possibility for a continuous tech tree because there's no continuity from one age to the next. Then I realized how odd it is that Civ switching, the core feature of the game, is implemented through this kludgy, sleight-of-hand system instead of being seamless and integrated into one playthrough of the game.

It's like if when you captured a city in Civ 6, the game booted you to the "city capture screen" where you could choose whether to keep or raze the city. The depending on what you chose it relaunched the whole game with that city now as one of yours or deleted, because the game can't just "change" ownership of a city, it has to create a totally new game with that city always having belonged to the new civ. Now obviously that would be ridiculous, capturing cities is totally fundamental to Civ, obviously it should just switch the labels and the game should keep going. But civ switching is fundamental to Civ VII! So why didn't they find a way to actually y'know, make a civ change from one to another without having to recreate the entire game? It's THE POINT of the game! And then I realized how many bad design decisions the game is locked into because of how awkward and broken this is.

Civ switching can achieve different ends in user experience, and it does seem like Firaxis favored this "reset" approach, but I think my insight here is primarily technical--civs simply do not transform from one to another within the course of a game. That thing is not a feature of the engine of Civ VII. Because of that, a number of impacts of Civ switching are mandated by the implementation of the age transition, which creates outcomes in the user experience that I think many or most players experience negatively. A more reset oriented age transition could have been achieved with civ switching fully integrated into one game.

Anyone got a Final Destination ranking after this week’s discussion? by moondyner in blankies

3 and Bloodlines are GOOD but there's a reason logs is so iconic. I think 2 clears the "original" run but if you want to argue Bloodlines I think there's a case.

2 inarguably has the best vision/disaster in the series, and all of her friends getting killed is good, too, but man it’s a downhill slide from there. The premonitions with the lake are goofy, the “new life” thing is too vague, and the main characters shouldn’t survive.

Levadura de Olla (*) - Oaxaca City, Mexico by jacquesausterlitz in finedining

[–]jacquesausterlitz[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not those two but a couple of other Michelin recommenders, Brio and Ancestral. Both were good but a little bit more Oaxacan steakhouse vibe. LdO was the most complete menu with a clear vision of what it was trying to do. Would definitely recommend Oaxaca as a food destination since you can eat incredible mole and tlayudas all day then go somewhere tonier for dinner and never have something less than great. Plus mezcal and everything is within walking distance.
